I messed up bad. I didn't do the best gpa wise in uni. I got an f in orgo I, I got a few Cs and B minuses to go along with it. Had two withdrawals too. No big upward trend ended up with around a 3.35 GPA. This made me work hard out of fear though so I swung a 510 on the MCAT which for me is pretty good. My ECs are also adequate at the very least if not above average. I decided I needed to take some extra classes, however, to prove that I am capable of getting consistent grades so I signed up for three courses this fall at my local state school. I just got word that I was denied student loans however and now I'm going to need to work full time to pay for rent and the debt I put on my credit card for the courses. The way I set up my classes I'm going to have to drop one to fit in the time to work enough to live on. I'm terrified that this third W along with my previous shaky application is going to be the final nail in the coffin. What do you guys think? Any way I can make up for it?

I think your solid MCAT will make you interesting to many schools. Just be prepared to discuss your erratic course work. Adcoms are people too and understand how life can be. I think your chances are excellent if you interview well. Good luck and best wishes!

Consider applying to an smp at an md school. Rock it and apply md/do the next year.

Do you think I need it? I was planning on just applying DO but was trying to avoid dropping the money for an SMP.

For DO, maybe not. You do have a shaky undergrad transcript. I know that it’s largely financial, but it’s hard to properly address that without getting the interview first. The Ws aren’t a huge deal. But having an F in a pre req is a red flag. Also, in most states that’s an MD level MCAT. So to me it’s kind of at the point where you have ask yourself if you want to be stressed out hoping to get into a DO school next year bc of your undergrad performance or do you want to do the smp next year (don’t know if you could apply this cycle or not) which delays you a year but if you do well you’ll get in DO and maybe MD (which could be cheaper than attending a DO school). Also, you get to apply with proof on paper of what you can do in school when you don’t have to worry about financial aid randomly screwing you.

TLDR: no you don’t “need” an smp. But I would “consider” it. Especially if I had access to one linked to my state MD school. I’d at least contact one and see if I could get in next cycle and see if there was a guaranteed acceptance at some gpa level, etc.

It’s just something to think about.

Have you graduated? You can re-take those classes at state university or college. You will do fine.
