Has anyone been able to do this without any hurdles, or is there a percentage of tuition which you are responsible for after the first day of class?

Many threads on this. Not only will you not get your tuition back, but you and the school will be in trouble. No med school is supposed to accept a student who has already matriculated. (assuming allo school to allo school). Seriously, do a search, oft debated on this forum.

Nope, it's a violation of AMCAS's policies

"No school make an acceptance offer, either verbal or written, to any individual who has enrolled in, or begun an orientation program immediately prior to enrollment at, a U.S. or Canadian school. Enrollment is defined as being officially matriculated as a member of the school's first-year entering class."
