Ever since I was a first year med student this thought constantly entered my mind. Will I have the time/energy to even work out at the gym during residency? I currently try to go at least 3 times a week but I'm wondering if that'll be possible next year, especially when you're an intern and especially when you're on floors.

I heard of interns who actually body build and have personal training clients they train. I'm on OB right and there's 2 OB guy residents who are huge and make the medical students measure their bicep size every week.

I'm sure it's doable but judging by the work I see IM interns doing, I think I'll be in maintenance mode at least during intern year. IM isn't Gen Surg, but it's brutal in its own way.

All this is being said by a 3rd year resident so my two cents aren't worth **** but felt like chipping in.

Yeah. Its harder for me to hit big goals anymore as quickly, but I still make slow progress and maintain what I've built. I think the hardest thing is recovery because you're not sleeping as much

I worked out all throughout med school, residency and now as an attending. I go 5-6 times a week. It is easy to make time. The hard part is having the willpower and strength to go even though you are tired. I highly advise going before or immediately after your shifts. Sure you are tired but the second you hit home, you ain't leaving!

Is it possible to compete in bodybuilding shows in med school and residency? Even a surgical residency?: /

Easier if no spouse, significant other, kids, or friends (other than workout buddy).
