Is it possible to do a Master's or Post-Bacc online, and if so, would dental schools accept it?

My undergrad GPA was pretty bad (2.97 overall) and so I'm thinking a post-bacc or Master's will be necessary. Unfortunately, there are no programs close by and I'm not sure if I'll be able to relocate anytime soon. I found this program: Clinical Microbiology | The George Washington University from GWU that appears to be an online Microbiology Masters, and I've found some other possible programs. My DAT score was a 22, have over 100 shadowing hours plus several hundred volunteer hours, and I've been working an an EMT for over a year and am going to be working as a dental assistant in summer. I think that a good Master's program would finally make me competitive. What do you guys think?

I applied to 15 schools, and everyone of them accepted online pre-requsites from UNE Online. As long as they are accredited, I think you should be fine. Call each schools and verify before you commit time and money into those online programs/classes though.

Thanks! I did see that UNE offered a lot of online pre-req classes. I'll see what's out there and what schools would accept it.

That's great to hear! I'm a non-traditional student who is looking at UNE currently. I am also looking at a post-bacc at a nearby private school targeted towards career changers, and UNE comes out to be so much more affordable. How was your GPA before taking the post-bacc classes? Mine is currently a bit under 3.0 (engineering major) but did well in chemistry and physics. Planning on getting A's in the UNE courses

My GPA was around a 3.3. As long as you get your gpa over a 3.0, do well on your postbac, and a 20+ DAT, I think you should be alright. I think it's common knowledge that an engineering major is one of the hardest undergrad major, so I don't think they will kill you for a low gpa. Just look at @DSchoolorBust202X for reference.

How did you get science professor letters of recommendations with UNE? Was that difficult or did you rely on your undergrad institution for that?

I got my letters of recommendations from my undergrad. I only took UNE courses to boost my gpa and finish my remaining pre-req. But I have heard of students getting letter of recommendation from distant learning professors. The two professors that I had were really nice. They gave me their personal contact information, so I had no issue contacting them. I'm sure if you ask nicely they would be open to writing those letters for you.

That's great to hear, I'm 5 years removed from undergrad and haven't talked to my professors in awhile, and I was an engineering/CS major in undergrad so the courses I took aren't the most relevant for dental school. I'll be sure to talk to the professors. I'm looking at doing 5 courses (Bio I/II, OChem I/II, BioChem). UNE is way more affordable than other post bacc programs I've seen

It also self paced, so if you have the right motivation you can get through it pretty quickly. Good luck my friend

What are people's thoughts on doing courses such as those offered through UNE Online to boost a science GPA, versus a masters or post bacc? If I have to reapply I feel like I need to add something to my application, but I'm not sure what since I did receive interviews and have been placed on several waitlists (still hoping for that one call since this is technically my gap year..I am working full time).

Did you ever get an answer to this? I'm in a very similar situation... need to improve application but since I received an interview I'm not sure if I want to commit to a formal masters program

I would seek your answer directly from admissions offices. Only way to avoid a wasted 2 years.
