Recently one of my friends decided to apply towards to dental school and this was his dat scores
PAT-17
Bio-19
Chem-18
Ochem-16
RC-23
QR-19
science gpa:2.9 overall gpa:3.0
Does he have a solid chance?

I am sorry to say, but those stats don't look that great... 🙁

He should consider enrolling in a post baccalaureate program. Those DAT scores also need improvement so he should retake the DAT when he is ready.

does that give him an edge over other applicants?

From the looks of it. My guess it his TS and TA is below 20...with a gpa like that, you need to rock it at least 20 across the board...and it is a big no no for science gpa...take some more sciences..Should take you a year to bring it to 3.2 with solid As in science...I was in the same shoes, my gpa and sgpa were slightly better but my DAT was 21 and nothing below 20....good luck man

Those are my current gpa values but I have 3 semesters of nothing but science left so that should be coming up. I also am studying for the DAT for 3 straight months with no other commitments besides lab work and a girlfriend...lol Goodluck if you put in the work it will pay off but only you know how hard you're really trying.

If you got some uniques skills or experiences, then a slim shot, for an interview to keep you on standby for any last minute withdrawals.

But with no skills no experiences, you should retake DAT and do one year more of full course work, maybe find another major, dental hygiene.

Its funny to say, but every now and then, a school decides to accepts one or two people with extremely low stats (I swear, its as if they have an internal joke).

But really, the odds are greatly stacked against your friend

Is your friend a URM? Maybe URM status + LOR + extracurriculars would boost up his/her chances.
I've seen stats like that and even a bit worse get accepted.

Solid chance if friend is URM. If not, not a solid chance at all.

no.... just no....

being a URM isn't a free way ticket to an acceptance.

From my experience as well, I have seen some pretty outrageous acceptances that can only be explained by URM status.

@FlossFloss should we tag along with the URM topic again?
It makes me so mad 😡. If a seriously inept student can get in because they have the advantage of checking a URM box and he fills the spot of someone who's lived life harder, the world is seriously twisted.

PSYCH: being URM means all admission doors will be open for you, and scholarships that the rest of the students with worse lives than the URM and much better grades can't get... because they simply aren't URM..

Not all URM students are of these low standards.

It is low to talk down on others. Especially if the facts are not known of each case for these students.

Don't worry.

The majority of enrollees are still white.

Sometimes it's good to have someone with low stats. Competition is necessary. And most likely some of these low stat individuals have interesting backgrounds or skills.

If not then it would be a joke. Not funny.

But to be honest I am one with these low end scores, 3.15 GPA.
