What exactly is a light-skinned Pakistani? Are you somehow better than a regular Pakistani lol? Is that going to be a part of your app to medical school?

I asked the same. It's not going to be a part of the app. It was explained to me that it's just a signifer to connect with others in the same boat. I'm still trying to figure out if I should add light skin African American in my siggy.

A very small portion of the Pakistani population is part of two sub-races that have light skin, Pathans and Kashmiries. It's a smaller subsect of Pakistani people, it makes me slight different. I already got a few msgs from other Pakistanies who are from the same region as me. Its not shadism thing.
Nor is it really that interesting? So many users on here have sigs like " Doing better than you". I literally just wrote my ethnicity.

But you didn't write just your ethnicity, you wrote your skin color (an attribute of skin color). I think that's what raises eyebrows.

Shadism, lol. It's colorism 🙂

Connect with other "light-skinned Pakistanis" lol? I didn't know they had their own group. Do the other Pakistanis know about this lol? Well I need more people to connect with too so how about "bronze-tan white American." I want to put that in my signature but I don't know I think it sounds a bit pretentious.

You've been on probation/hold like ten times and go around telling people how great Carib diploma mills are do you really think your opinion is important at all??

hahah yes look another culture identifies certain groups differently that's so worth mocking haha

Gotcha! I wonder if it has the same meaning as colorism does in the US. My community would not think skin tone is a subset worth bonding over within our group. Especially a subset that gets preferential treatment.

I should add the same to my siggy and go post in the URM forum and see how long it takes to get ripped. Lol.

Nope, not interesting. But it does say something about you and how you think which I find despicable. I find it cringe-worthy actually being that I have Pakistani and Arab friends who I could care less are brown, Muslim, or whatever. People are people; you shouldn't be talking about skin color...especially when you're going [I mean trying real hard] to get into this field.

A thing another culture does or a thing an individual does?

I mentioned not understanding and trying not to be enthnocentric when I asked the question. These groups within this culture have names though. Light skin isn't the only way to identify them so I think your reaction is a reach.

I don't know any culture that identifies based on skin tone. I'm calling her out on being politically incorrect. And it's not mocking; it's internet bi***-slapping.

From talking with my peeps back in college my understanding was that it is a very widespread thing to care about light skin and even the area of the country your family comes from, I think like even north india vs south india is significant to many iirc. I'm just saying while I can't fathom ever caring about a friend who is pale vs tan here in America, I understand this kind of stuff matters elsewhere and wouldn't laugh at someone for identifying along that line.

And how familiar are you with cultures from this area of the world lmao, I know I certainly wasn't at all before friends broke it down for me

Edit: I actually had a co-worker with a very traditional family from India that were trying to find a husband for the sister, and apparently skin tone can be a big part of how desirable people are

Also it's great that in one page this went from MCAT score improvement to significance of skin tones in other nations

This is America. You keep that thinking where you came from. Don't bring it here. It concerns me that people like that want to work in healthcare where you are going to be exposed to all types of people. That make sense to you?

Totally agree that it's widespread to care about light skin. Nobody is debating that. What I was saying is the commenter you quoted wasn't simply mocking the way another culture does something (as you were accusing).

The subsets she's describing have actual names that identify them, not simply the term "light skin". Nobody would bat an eye if she included her actual ethnicity in her siggy (Pathans or Kashmiries). Every other Pakistani would know exactly what she's conveying, but she found it pertinent to include skin tone.

Oh come on dude, there are far worse mindsets all over the place in America. Remember that time when a presidential candidate had a tape come out where they bragged about grabbing women in the genitals, and then they got elected with a +12% margin among male voters? Being around people that hold on to some old cultural identifiers should be way down on the worry list, imo

Lets hear it from aformerstudent then, because I think he does object to Pakistani or Indian immigrants still caring about light skin over here in 'merica

While I can't speak for other posters I'd assume most of us object to colorism. Preferring lighter skin is widespread in probably EVERY community of color, but I'm not going to pretend its a good thing. In fact, most communities of color are learning to love themselves exactly the way there are and trying hard to reject the idea that only certain attributes are attractive. We live in a color obsessed world and there's a million sociological reasons why.

Any how, this wasn't even the point of your first post. You commented that the aformerstudent was judging the way a culture identified a group people, and I just wanted to make it clear that these groups have actual names to identify them. That's it.

Let's all get back on topic, please (if there is still a topic)...

well OP's friend decided to take the MCAT anyways despite advice to the contrary and apparently felt he did very well. OP will probably report a month later to say how his friend performed. that's about it.

the random off-topic discussion has no purpose to the thread so i didn't bother reading it.

I mean Caucasian is an actual name, German is an actual ethnicity, but that doesn't mean it's wrong for me to self-identify as white is it? I think it's pretty reasonable to use "light skinned" as an identifier in the same way as I would use "white" without saying hey there's a actual name!

Or maybe not maybe it's super insulting to say light-skinned I don't know enough about this /shrug

Yeah. Not at all the same.

EDIT: Sorry, just saw the off-topic warnings. PM me efle if for some reason you care to know why/more.
