I watched the nrmp webinar vid thing where they explained that they, bc not connected to ERAS, have no idea who interviewed/even applied etc.

couldn't this mean someone could technically get ranked without an interview. or like a late, buzzer beater, non-regular interview bc of some high pedigree phone call?

thanks

A match only happens if you rank a program that also ranks you. So even if NRMP isn’t connected with ERAS, there is no way a program is going to rank you without interviewing you. Unless your dad is the PD of course.

yea I kinda get it. so technically it's possible. just .000001% scenario where you have to know the guy inside and all that

No matter who you know, a program is not going to rank you without an interview. It takes more than one person to decide whether you are a good fit for their program.

The Match involves two parties: ERAS is affiliated with AAMC and AACOM (mostly representing medical schools and academic teaching hospitals); it sets up the application system to schedule interviews. NRMP (representing residency programs collectively) is (in this discussion) a matching algorithm that analyzes match lists from candidates and member residency programs.

Some residency programs can exist outside of the Match. It is my understanding that they don't do ERAS.

For example, policies may be established to accommodate transfers. Example

gotcha thanks

Could a rogue PD add a non-interviewed candidate to the program's rank list? Technically I suppose they could.

Would this happen? Not within reason.

Candidates can rank programs they did not interview with. It would never generate a match, but they can do it.

makes sense.

technically - there's no drawback to ranking a program you didn't interview with other than wasting time and an application fee, right? since it's applicant-proposing and the algo would just go to the next program in the list?

thanks

There is no additional fee associated with ranking extra programs besides the original NRMP registration fee. The application fee only applies to your ERAS application.
