Is it possible to work at a paying job while attending dental school?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It is possible if you get by with a few hours of sleep.

Anything is possible.

I would say the vast majority do not.

A few people, myself included, work part time for companies like Kaplan or privately tutor other graduate students or undergraduates. The hours are usually reasonable. And its almost always flexible.

As far as any kind of normal employment, it would definitely be a stretch.

Dental school is a full time job. You simply aren't going to have that much free time during normal "work" hours even if you put no outside work into it.

I have an o-chem lab TA that is in dental school, he works maybe 8 hours a week as a TA so its not a huge commitment.

I know of at least 1 person in my class that works a "normal" job. Not sure how many hours a week but this will definitely depend on the person. I know I spend way more than 8-10 hours a week with my family. So if you are single and no kids it may be a little more doable. However, I wouldn't recommend it. You won't earn enough to make it worth it (in my opinion). 👍

There are others in my class who work in the library or in other parts of the school for a few hours a week.

I am getting my bartending license now, that might lead to a small gig on the weekends. If not, oh well. The class was a gift to me.

The tour guide at one of my interviews has been working as a bartender since she was a D3. Instead of drinking with her class, she serves her class. But she wouldn't recommend it for D1 and 2

I might keep my job when I go to d school. my boss lets me study a lot during work. But it all depends on where you draw the line of making money vs having a life. If I worked while doing the military scholarship, then I could probably bring home about 2500/mo while in school. That's not too bad. But then again, it would probably come at the price of having a life.

Hell no its not possible. Just to get A's in my classes I have to study about 3-4 hrs per day. classes usually run from 8-5 on some days and 8-12 on others. Weekends are breaktime/study time. When could you ever possibly fit working????

During your weekend break time. lol.

stripper or escort. Or is that law students?

lol there was a law school grad who couldnt afford to repay her loans. so she became a stripper. thats probably a higher honor than being a lawyer. yuck.

I will pay for your entire dental school education for 4 years if you can hold down a full time job (40 hrs/wk) and not fail out. Guaranteed.

Haha I knew a girl from college who worked as a stripper to pay for school. Of course all the homeys had to visit her for a lap dance lol.

I had a friend who dated a stripper.

He broke up with her after people kept telling him that they felt up his girlfriend for 20 bucks.

In the long run, the few hundred dollars you earn each month are peanuts compared to getting a good nights sleep and enjoying what free time you will actually have.

Do you really want to earn a few bucks a month and be stressed with d-school? I think I'd rather catch up on sleep or hang out with classmates at a bar or nightclub rather than work. Plus you'll be so busy that some weekends you wont be able to work. So again is $250 extra a month worth the additional stress? I dont think it is.

Does anyone work?
As a DS1, I think I can work part-time and just "pass" my classes. Granted I will be at the bottom pile of the class rank

As a DS2, from what I am seeing these guys are put through, noooo way in hell. They spend like, 3-4 days a week in the lab till like 8-9 PM (just to complete their various projects). THEN they have to go home and study for upcoming quizzes (they have quizzes up the butt).

However, i hear things (didactically) slow down a bit during DS3 and DS4 (I imagine you can have part-time work).... This is just my guess

to be honest, working during school is just not worth it. I mean you're paying 20000ish a quarter for tuition, what will you gain from a part time job? 1500 a month? at the risk of failing classes I say its a bad idea.

I think anyone would pretty much advise against working. I bet less than 5% of any given DS school class actually holds a job.

The only time I think its okay to work is if you have a job that seriously cranks. If your talking about $8-10 dollar an hour job, forget it.

don't get that license/certificate. its all scam. I have worked at a bar for a year and half. Bars don't hire bartenders. they hire busser, doormen, and waitress. If they stick around a long enough and pay their dues, they get promoted and eventually get trained.

Only a few bars straight up hire bartenders, and its either they know people or have years of experience.

+1 total scam

Honestly, the idea of getting some extra income sounds great but if you are only getting paid $10 or less an hour is totally not worth doing poorly in dental school. And besides, dental school is your work.

I agree a TA is a pretty good gig. I have thought about keeping my bio TA job through dental school, if i get into one of the schools here. Most weeks i might work 3-5 hours, but i get paid for 10 hours a week. If i teach 2 labs a week, maybe 7 hours of work for 20 hours of pay.

Some students work as hygienists during 3rd and 4th year. You can take your Hygiene boards after 2nd year I believe. There are quite a few dental students I know that do hygiene on the weekend and its a pretty good paying job.
