hello,

my flight back home is scheduled to leave New Yok at 6 am the next morning after my interview day. I don't really want to book a hotel just to sleep in for few hours. So my plan is either sleeping in the airport or check out the night life in New York. I would prefer checking out the city during the night, but is Manhattan pretty safe at night (around midnight) ? Does it offer taxi service 24/7? Thanks.

taxi run around the clock, but are you going to want to walk around with your overnight bag and things? I think if your short on money to look at hostels, there are some really nice ones in good areas for VERY inexpensive. NY is safe, but I'm not sure if that what you should. Look into hostels and maybe that'd be a better/safer route for you to take!

I agree, take that advice.... do not sleep in NY airports first of all, and you can't be walking around NYC with all your belongings. Believe me, you will like the city on first site, most people do, its unlike any other place. But some ppl hate how dirty it is and certain parts at night are not very good. Don't wlalk around by urself at night... your just asking for trouble.

I sorta disagree on this....NYC is beautiful at night...just as long as you stay in the touristy areas....best area that comes to mind is Times Square where it's alive all throughout the night specially Fri/Sat/Sun...but you're right...if you have a lot of bags...you'll get pretty tired....then again...you can sleep in the port authority bus terminal which is right by times square...and taxis do run 24/7....besides..if you're flight is at 6am you're going to have to leave manhattan by around 3:30-4ish so it's not through the entire night....

i agree on the "entire" night at the airport..... of course times square is ok at night but its not very nice when your by yourself and have bags...... and on another note..... NYC is very nice when you have a lot of money to blow around and waste..

Seriously do not consider sleeping in Port Authority- I live in NYC and cannot think of anything scarier! You could definitely hang out at a bar til around 3am without being sketched out, and if you make friends with a few bartenders at a friendly bar, they'll keep your bags behind the bar or something. Then you could catch a cab to the airport at 3:30am and be right on time for your flight. Not my ideal situation, but you could do it - provided you're a very personable person who doesn't mind hanging out at a bar alone, and having a hungover flight! 🙂

come to think of it...you're absolutely right....port authority can be a real scary place at night....and you may even need a bus ticket to enter after a certain time....didn't mean to mislead anyone.....thanks for the correction!!

Just stay in nice areas in Manhattan at night and you'll be ok. You can check out the village, time square, 5th ave, rockafellar center etc. South Street Seaport probably shouldn't be so bad.

I agree with the bar thing.
Don't sleep at the airport

I would talk to the school and let them know your situation. They might be able to arrange something so you could stay with a current student.

Why don't you get a hotel near the airport, even if it's just a cheap one. This way they usually have shuttles to the airport and whatever you were going to pay for a cab from the city you spent in a safe hotel room. I get creeped out with some of those cab drivers when i'm by myself...true story...lol

I wandered during my columbia interview til the wee hours of the morning. It was torture. It all depends on your personality...I was all by myself and there were only so many toy/department stores to look at. So I got really bored.

Your bags can be stored by the hotel you slept at the previous night. Just be nice to them from the beginning and ask nicely. They won't say no...it's a very normal request.

I ended up at the airport at 2am with a 630am flight...did some sleeping because they wouldn't check me in yet.

AND DO NOT USE SUPERSHUTTLE. If they don't have enough people in your area that need to be picked up, they won't pick you up. No phone call, no text, nothing. If they are busy elsewhere in the city, your reservation means nothng. When i took supershuttle from the airport, we spent 1 hr circling the airport until all damn 15 seats were full. It was rediculous. Save yourself the stress and get a taxi.

I hear Central Park's beautiful at night
