I really have lost all motivation: I have a biochemistry exam this Wednesday and several chapters left to read and I've lost all of my motivation. I really don't want to fail this course, or the lab, or physics, but I just don't seem to have that "killer instinct" anymore. I'll open my books and not understand something instantly and just give up for the day. I really don't know what could be wrong with me but I just feel like everything I do is completely pointless.

Just remember, if you continue to have that attitude towards your school work this year, your grades, your med school app, and your chances of securing gainful employment as a post-grad are all going to significantly decrease.

A year from now, if you're still planning on going to med school, you're going to be kicking yourself (1) wishing that you hadn't been lazy in your last and, most likely, (2) wishing that you were back in college... where your most significant preoccupations were doing well on exams and getting laid at house parties.

College is freaking awesome. Kill it your last semester and have fun doing it. This is the time when you need to be on your A-game, fully invested, and living your young adult life to the absolute max.

I planned on applying next year and I know how critical things are at this point in time but I still cannot muster the effort necessary to get good grades. I guess it lies in the fact that I'm struggling in biochemistry and physics and I don't seem to grasp the topics despite my effort.

My college experience wasn't really that fun( I didn't party and I didn't really date). I just am at the point where I want to be done with college so I can move onto medical school, hopefully.

However, if you've been accepted then all you need to do is pass. The way I see it is why keep running the race if you've already crossed the finish line? Once you're accepted just coast and don't flunk anything and you'll be fine

We all get senioritis. Just don't forget what you're pursuing in the long run.

Okay. Rewind.

Start working your ass off! Have so much fun, go out until you're at your wits end, and study whenever you have downtime.

C'mon! This is your last year of college!

From your post, you are neither studying hard nor having fun! The right answer is do both of those, and your outlook on life will change for the better.

If I have a biochem exam in 3 days, what do you guys suggest I do (I have 4-5 chapters to read)? I have a problem that when I'm struggling in class, I cannot seem to enjoy anything else (and feel guilty if I do. I'm willing to put work into my courses but I try and don't seem to know how to work effectively. In addition, my school sucks in terms of resources outside of class so I'm kind of left to my own devices.

Have you already taken the MCAT? Biochemistry is super helpful and definitely worth your full effort

Find a friend or group of people in your classes to compete with for higher grades, this has helped me get back into the grind immensely this year. I was worried about biochem I as a biochem major since before this you do not take anything biochem, however I have a 103% in the class currently. Feel free to PM any questions you have.

LOL I have a biochem exam Tuesday and I have negative motivation. There's the crippling uncertainty of what I'll be doing for the next year (whether or not a med school accepts me), coupled with overall senioritis that is holding me from studying. I got a D on the first test-- and I'm an 3.7 student lol.

I'm a good student too and I'm also having so much doubt lately. I starting reading my chapters and creating Anki cards so hopefully I'll pull through; I hope you pull through as well.

Try studying with friends and adding in some sort of new "rigor" to another activity. This helped me a lot. So like, I forced myself to go running everyday or lifting lots of weights. Or I would practice an instrument etc etc. The point is that if you get motivated and hard working in something besides school, it might translate to your schoolwork (it did for me).

Definitely get study buddies, and keep looking to the future. Make todo lists!

There are so many resources online for reviewing topics that are tough. Find the ones that work for you! YouTube is your friend- the Kahn academy is excellent and you can find hundreds of other videos for any topic you're struggling with. I'm currently applying but didn't take biochem, currently I am taking a class online through iTunes U. It's not for credit but the professor, Dr Ahern, teaches at Oregon State, films his lectures, and posts them online. He's even written a free textbook to go with it. His lectures are excellent.

Senioritis is real. I definitely felt it my senior year, took a year off, and am excited to go back to school. Keep your future goals in mind and work through it.

Also, start having some fun- hobbies, friends, do something. Might not help with motivation, but you just need to find balance in life, so start now!

So if I signed up for 16 credits and fail like 7-8 of them, how screwed am I? My GPA was only like 3.51 before this semester and I feel like I've put myself in a situation where I'll never get into medical school. I'm taking physics, quantitative analysis, biochemistry and cell biology and I think I'm going to wind up failing biochem and physics, despite my best efforts. In addition, I never have time to relax because something is ALWAYS coming up for med to do. Finally, some of my professor don't even test concepts but rather they test how well you can MEMORIZE what you read (i.e. petty testing). I'm just so upset because I really cannot afford a hit to my GPA and it feels like that is what is going to happen in about 6 weeks. I've been extremely depressed for the past month and no matter how hard I try I just feel like nothing is ever good enough.

Thanks for letting me vent guys.

It sounded like you were depressed 🙁 Good thing is that you are somewhat aware of it and I hope you get the help you need in some way! Motivation might fail but that's where discipline comes in. Be disciplined and do your best whilst taking care of yourself. If you need time to rest then rest. If you do your best, what more can you do? Good luck lil dude!

I get that I need rest but I also cannot fail classes. I just feel like all my hard work is about to be ruined due to one poor semester.
