I have not submitted my app yet but I was planning on doing it today, and I was wondering if it is to late for this cycle? I took the MCAT in July and got a 23 but plan on taking it again in Jan. Also, I have a 3.2ish GPA so I know that is bad as well for applying late. But I have been doing post-bac for 2 years now with a 3.7. Any suggestions?? I would really like to apply this year if I have a shot, thanks for the help

if you want to be in this year's cycle, don't retake MCAT and submit "as is". retaking mcat will delay reviewing of your application which will lower the chance of getting in.

you did your best on MCAT and there is no guarantee that you will do better.

in the world of applying to DO schools, i think timing if more crucial than stats. many people applying to DO schools don't have stella gpa and mcat scores. unless you have 30+ mcat, i would argue that it's all the same.

many people already got admission offers, including myself, so i would say you are a little bit behind but not too far. apply now and pray hard!

good luck

No one around here could predict where you'll be in a year, if you apply. However, if you have some good letters and ECs/clinicals, are confident that you can kill the January test, have a little money you're not too attached to, and really want to not wait another year, then go for it. It doesn't seem impossible, but you should certainly turn in everything ASAP, study hard, and know that it'll be an uphill battle. I hope it turns out well for you. :luck:

EDIT: I'm assuming you're taking the January test. It's debatable whether or not this is best. Your score is on the fringe, IMO.

so you dont think that I should put that I am going to re-take in Jan and then if I dont get in just re-take it then anyways or the spring for the 2010 cycle?? I made a few key mistakes in the MCAT and I think that I could do better but like you said you never know.

In general, noting a retake will hold your application up until February. You can always chance it with your current score, then take it again if things aren't going well. However, schools that reject you before February likely won't look at your app again this season, even if you have a shiny, new MCAT score.

exactly. applying with 23 is like taking a crapshot at med schools. i think it's almost disrespectful. it means you are not ready. but at least get it in time you know what i mean? if you don't do better in jan, then you have absolute no chance. may be retake it in a few weeks and apply now. jan is too late. 👍

anyone know if an adcom is waiting for another MCAT and you do worse on it then the one on file...which do they use? I took 7/18 and scored 26 but the one on 8/26 i took actually felt harder in bio (scored a 10 first time around).

higher score. period. =)

I think that if schools just look at an MCAT score and nothing else I wouldnt want to go there anyways, I think that is disrespectful, I am well-rounded and I want to go to a school that likes those type of people not just one that is about numbers (I know that the numbers are important I am not trying to say dont look at those) I just think for someone to say just because I got "X" score I should not get in bc I am not ready..., and I cant retake in a few weeks bc sept 13th is the last date for 08. but thanks for your help any comments are great🙂

I'm in the same boat, 23M with a 3.16s and 3.11c gpa. I have let one school know I'm retaking and the other two I am going to take my chances (I only applied to three schools, two of which usually have lower stats). I not trying to say anything bad about those two schools, obviously I want to go there if I applied, I just think I do actually have a chance at those schools after speaking with the admissions office. I personally think it will be better to tell most of the schools that you are retaking in January. You could just get put on hold, but you could also get flat out rejected. Either way, good luck and I would hang in there!

I think your MCAT is borderline and you should probably only retake if you think you can get 30+... the main concern on your app will probably be the GPA... if you really don't want to wait another year to apply (and have the funds to apply to more schools), I would definitely add more schools and apply more broadly. But your EC's look great. I am no admissions expert by any means but in your shoes I would either apply very, very broadly (and not re-take MCAT because that will hold your app back even further unless youre sure you can break a 30 to off-set the GPA), or wait another year and enroll in a 1-year master's (what I'm currently doing right now) to boost that GPA. That also gives you more time to retake your MCAT. Either way...

Good luck to both of us this year!!!

How do you know that???

I wouldn't be so sure. If you were to ask each school, "Which score would you take, if I had two scores from the past two years?" you'd get one of several responses. Thus, I'm not convinced that just because this is a subset of that example, wherein you're in the middle of an app cycle when you receive your scores, that the answer will differ.

BTW the potential answers include, but are not limited to:

1. Take the highest
2. Take the most recent
3. Average the two composite scores
4. Make a best case scenario score, using your section scores

I am not very good at picking schools to apply to or finding out which to add, do you have any suggestions for schools I should add, and where I can look for this info??

my point too😀, hopefully the schools are not as black and white as some on here make them out to be

I think that this is a very rude thing to say. A lot of people have underlying issues about taking tests such as the MCAT, including myself. Besides, DO schools look at more than just your MCAT, and there are some schools that have averages of 23 for their MCAT (WVSOM, PSCOM).

Just because you got an acceptance and may have better stats than someone else does not mean that you should cut people down and tell them that they can't acheive their dreams.

This forum should be helpful, useful advice, yours is not either.

I heard about someone who got into UT-Southwestern (big time research school, usually ranked top-15, students rotate at Parkland, etc.) with a 20 on the MCAT a few years ago. And on the flipside, I couldn't get an interview in Texas with a 33, through two cycles.

Having said that, if you've got a 23 on the MCAT, you will need to have a very strong application in other areas, and absolutely do not mention to anyone that you have problems taking tests.

In medical school, a good amount of the rest of your life will be determined by your performance on high-pressure multiple-choice tests. So this means you're going to have to figure out what you're doing wrong, and get better. And don't talk about this as a weakness, because as far as some adcom person is concerned, this could translate to being a poor medical student. So do what you can to correct this issue, and turn it into a strength.

If your only problem is taking tests, then you are home free if you can get this turned around. Until then, just own up to it, say you didn't do as well as you expected, and you have no excuses.

Anyway, good luck. I have classmates who didn't have such a great MCAT, who seem to be doing fine so far.

I am glad Im not the only one that feels this way, so perhaps you have a list of schools that I might have a chance at?? I am not very good with finding these as I said earlier and would love some help and direction with that

I agree. I thought that was rude too. I can't say what the OP's chances are with a 23 but I do know that med schools look at more than just the MCAT. I got a 22 and was accepted at two schools and after my first week of med school I'm still passing. :meanie: I would suggest not putting that you are retaking and just see how it goes. That's the risk I took so it could pay off or you may be reapplying next year. I think it's worth taking the chance now. :luck:

I just spoke to PCOM-GA and LMU and they said they would NOT put me on hold just for stating I was retaking the MCAT. They basically said if I get an interview then I would have received one anyway, and if I don't then I'll be put on hold until the new one arrives and if I wasn't retaking then I probably would have been rejected.

i sincerely apologize if people took my comment offensive. 😛
my point was to apply as early as possible and now is the best time!

but I still think med school admission is a crapshot. you will never know if you will get in or not. i've been working and out of school for a couple years now and this is my 3rd time applying. I see some people getting into multiple school with low stats and really great high stat people not getting into any.

after all we only have 100/3000 ish chance.

we are all in the same boat. i think many of us don't have stella stats 4.0 32+ whatever. i just pray for good luck.

so just try applying before it's too late. after all it's all crapshot!!!

oh no everyone is saying different things, to put that I am retaking or not??!!! Well PCOM-GA is one of my top choices so I dont want to screw it up for them, but then again i want to make sure I have the best chance at all schools of course, so does anyone else have any suggestions based on this??

I know that I have no excuse and I am glad in a way that it went this way for me bc I have learned a lot of test taking skills from it which I hope will be helpful for the future for sure, so hopefully I will have luck somewhere and turn this into a + for me like you said, and maybe I will see ya at GA-PCOM soon😀 I hope my app is strong in other areas but it isnt my GPA🙁

call them yourself and ask them their advice. That would be the best thing to do in your situation. their number is 1-800-999-6998. they are very nice and helpful. let us know what they tell you if you do decide to call.

Well, just to rebut a little, I know that a 23 is subpar on the MCAT, I was consistently scoring 29-32 on all of my practice tests and while I do get nervous for tests, it is only the big ones, I am fine on exams in classes....anyway, I know that this is something that I need to work on, and I think others are in the same boat......it is hard not to get nervous when you know that so much is riding on a single test!

Anyway, to get to the point of my post:

Here are the schools I applied to and their averages, as I understand them, and how they told me they view MCAT scores:

WVSOM: average MCAT 23, average GPA: not sure, committe does not have set way to look at MCAT scores...talked to director of admissions and he said this was to my advatage, but I didn't really understand what he meant
LECOM: average MCAT from website is around 24, GPA around 3.5, they take the highest score
PCOM: average MCAT around 24, take highest test, and GPA around 3.3
MSUCOM: (my in-state school) average MCAT: 26-27, average GPA: 3.5, they take the highest overall score
OUCOM: average MCAT: 25, take highest score from each section! GPA, not sure but around a 3.4 I think
PCSOM: average MCAT: 23, take highest composite score, average GPA: 3.2...This school is very big on rural primary care!
CCOM (which I was told by the adcom that I have basically no chance at with my MCAT score) average MCAT: 27, GPA: 3.5, they take the highest score overall

There are certainly others you amy want to add to this list. I have a preference to stay close to MI if at all possible

OK, so I hope that helps a little. I know that having a low MCAT sucks, but I do NOT agree that it makes us less competent, I have a 3.8 science GPA since freshman year when I had some family issues! WE CAN DO IT!! If this isn't your year, next year may be! But if you want it bad enough, GO FOR IT!!!! You will never succeed at anything that you don't try!

There's my bit of motivation for you, good luck this cycle!

hey thanks for that!!! I could use some motivation for sure, I am going to call some schools today and see what they think and go from there but I am going to apply this year just trying to see what they say about the whole to put that I am taking in Jan or not. Maybe Ill get lucky!!!

I just got an interview invite from LMU today and I did notify them that I was retaking a couple of weeks ago. Just going to let you know it is possible with a 23! Good luck! I'll let you know if anything happens with PCOM-GA.

I think most of that data is out dated by atleast 5 years. Many of those schools have higher reported statistics currently. Just a heads up......expect them to be a bit higher.

Thanks for letting me know! I know the MSU and CCOM is current because it was posted as the averages for the 2012 entering class by current med students in the school forums for both schools. WVSOM told me on the phone that I was at their average MCAT with a 23 and above their average GPA with a 3.4, so I know those 3 for sure, and I recently received the catalog for PCSOM and their stats should also be from last year, the other schools, like I said, is just what I have heard on forums and through websites!

A classmate told me that the averages for our class here at GA-PCOM this year was 3.7/26. I have not heard that from an official source, so use this information however you want.

Probably pretty close. GPA might be a tiny bit high. I'm seriously considering the biomedical program if I don't get in this year. Have you heard much about it?

I'm in a biomed program at AZCOM (branch of CCOM) and if PCOM's program is anything like ours you get an automatic interview with the medschool and the courses are designed to be a "mini-medschool" curric. They're actually much harder than I thought they would be, but maybe being out of school for so long does that to you. I've found most of my classmates are here to boost their GPA's, but in my case, I'm worried about it hurting my GPA. Luckily I think the undergrad/post-bacc GPA's are kept separate; otherwise, I would seriously consider dropping out esp. after receiving my first acceptance if I get one.

Careful. Most schools accept you contingent upon your completion of whatever program you're currently enrolled in. I'm sure about this for degree granting programs during the year before matriculation, but not sure how a program like yours would factor in. Just wanted to bring it to your attention. I hope you get the early acceptance and have to worry about this "problem."

Thank you, Chocolate Bear!! I know it sounds really bad to be saying that esp. in a public place, but just being honest 🙁 Perhaps I will delete all my comments when this chaos is over 😀

Haha, don't worry. We all jump through hoops, and it's understandable to want to stop jumping, ASAP.

Don't like hi-jacking your thread but figured since I am in your same boat it would be pointless to start a whole new thread.

I have a Science 3.2 and N-Science 3.0 and I am hoping to get my app submitted tonight. This would mean I don't get verified till October, are not most offers made by that time. I have my preferred schools but I want to be a doctor more than wanting to go somewhere specific so any advice would be appreciated.

Also I have finally been picked up by a DO that will be writing my letter, when is the latest this letter can be in. I know I am way behind the 8-ball but just had life kinda take a dump on me all at once. Really appreciate it fella's

Bump for chocolate bear or anybody that can give an honest opinion? 😕

What's your MCAT? gpa, especially science, seems ok. you are getting late but stop thinking about it and do it! The DO letter will need to be in with your secondaries and before they will consider you for admission. Have him send it to interfolio (easiest in my opinion). Wait until you AACOMAS is verified and you receive secondary apps. Then, send them in with a one night turnaround and send the interfolio document with the do letter. how were you others letters transferred? Interfolio usually takes about a week after they receive the letter to upload it. From there it is pretty quick to get to the schools.

👍👍

Knowing your MCAT would be helpful, but if it's not dismal, I'd probably go ahead.

Lots of offers will have been made at that point, but many will still be open. It won't be too late, yet.

Thanks guys, good to hear some positive news. MCAT was a 28M. Not sure how the screening goes but I shamefully pulled a 7 in PS.

I am using interfolio for my LOR from professors and the DO. Another question I have is if it is ok to submit my app if transcripts have not yet been received? I know it takes about a month so I am sure they will be there in time but would I be risking anything byy doing this? Thanks guys!!!

Oh cool. Your MCAT shouldn't hold you back--even the 7.

Submitting and getting your transcripts to them do not have a particular required order. Just do them both NOW!

Thanks CB, definite asset to SDN. Trying to polish out one last sentence in my personal statement and I should be hitting submit within 15min. Thanks again! 👍

Thanks. Be sure to check out the secondary prompts link and get them done now. You have about 8 weeks before you'll need to submit them, along with your letters. Welcome to waiting...I hope you have a hobby!
