Is it too early to send an "in the area" email when I have been complete for only a few days? It's true I'll be in the area for family stuff, but I don't want to seem annoying and bug them about it so early. The question period in time is about 2 months away.

Should I wait a little while?

I would wait. Interview invites have not even started going out yet.

So in the area emails should usually be sent after the school has started sending out invites? According to last year's threads though, it looks like many of them don't start sending out interviews until September, which is when I'd be around 🙁.

Usually people do this when they are going to be in town for an interview at a nearby school. I'm not sure that the success rate for this strategy is all that great, but it's one of those things that probably doesn't hurt.

Thanks for the advice so far. I have received an interview already, and it happens to be right near my parents' house, so I was thinking about telling other schools around that I'll be there.

So I definitely will be in the area for family + interview reasons. Isn't that an appropriate situation? But I'm concerned with hassling schools when I JUST became complete.

I definitely think you should wait. It is way too early. Even though you may have received an invite, most schools haven't even started handing out interviews yet. Contacting them right after your complete and before they're even handing out interviews yet will just annoy the heck out of them. I'd play it safe and just wait it out and when September and October rolls around, then you can start contacting schools.

They don't work that well during interview season. I don't see how they could work when they are still in the previous cycle and have not begun to schedule interviews.

I really don't see these as effective until Aug/Sept at the earliest. They are most effective if you 1) are living more than 2,000 miles from the school (or more than 2 flight legs due to living in or heading to a remote location) and 2) have stats well above avg for that school.

Wow, an interview already? Congrats, that's crazy fast! I'm just starting to get butterflies in my stomach because I received a few emails saying I'd hear yay or nay on interviews within the next 3 weeks.

From what I've heard about calling it depends on the school (for instance Cornell is supposedly great with calls). I agree with most of the others though about it being a bit too early for calls. Many schools have not even released secondaries yet.
