I really want to be a physician and after much review of the DO philosophy I really would like to attend...however...is it just too late. I don't have DO recommendation.

I have a 3.9 and and a 24 mcat...publication....good extra currics...if i get my stuff in by tomorrow (sat) and get my transcript forwarded on monday...would I stand even a chance.

Would it just be ok to get my name out there...im looking at NYCOM especially

Just call them on Monday and ask. If it helps, just remember that adcoms are made up of human beings, not computers. However.....a deadline is a deadline...

Good luck, though.

I know i can reach the deadline...i just don't want to apply if the class is aleady full..would they be able to tell me that.

I applied later than this last year and was accepted, but you need to get on it now. A LOR from a DO would be very helpful, and maybe required so I would get on that now as well.

well i think i can send a letter of rec by Feb 15...so i'll get my application stuff in by tomorrow at the latest and then try to get DO letter by Feb 15...at the latest

hey bigmuny
how late did you apply and what were your stats..if you don't mind me asking.....i am looking at nycom

I don't want you to read this the wrong way, but I'm sure that DO schools might think this. Did you suddenly realize that DO schools, philosophy, is the right way after you haven't heard back from any MD programs? I mean, I'm assuming you applied MD and you haven't had any luck because your 24 is holding you back a bit. So, now you're thinking, "Shoot, I've got to get in somewhere and I really, really like DO's now."

Honestly, I think it's going to be a hard sell this late in the game. You've never shawdowed, shown any interest, and you're suddenly applying. Your primary won't be complete until March and who knows when you're going to get an interview. You might be looking at waitlist only, at best, this late.

Good luck.

lp1cw - i think you are right on look:

" Can I request a decision before letters are sent out?
I need to make some decisions by next week about what I will b doing this semester. However, I won't receive a decisions from a school until the week of the 20th. But I interviewed at the school earlier and im sure they have made a decisions on my acceptance/rejection by now. Do you think it would be possible to call up the school, tell them my situation and ask if a decision has been made, and if it has, what it is? Or will that just not happen ever and I will be laughed at? Thank you. "

he has jus recently started posting in pre-Do, and was posting all in pre-MD... yea... ur right on...

Yeah, if I thought the DO was something was worthless or of no use I wouldn't even bother with it. I am actually more interested in a DO than MD now. Also, I have been setting up shadowing positions with two DOs for the next few weeks. If it takes being treated like crap to search for new optionis and directions and life and one finds them and they happen to be similar to yours -- you certainly should not mock them. If your DO is just as good as a MD, then you should not be so defensive. Rather, you should be proud about it.

It is so late in the game, I would strongly encourage you to use this next 6 months to shadow a DO, read up on the DO education and field and then apply fresh and new AND on-time in June. It is your best bet at this point and the DO schools will question why you would be applying this late. As it was said above, applicants don't apply this late unless they have been turned down by the MD schools, and the schools know that. Sorry but it is a fact. I've seen the same thing happen for years here on SDN. The DOs you would shadow have to put a date down for when they met with you. What do you think it would look like when it says Jan or Feb on it.

Do youself a HUGE favor and wait.... and apply with the class aplying in June.

Here is the deadline timeline
http://www.aacom.org/colleges/deadlines.asp

Good luck.

why give up on MD? just because you didnt get in this time?? remember, you will be constantly asked, what is a DO, why did you go DO instead of MD??

most ppl do not get in the first time around to the place they wanna go, so just give yourself a little more time to beef up your application and apply again.

i just say all of this because it sounds to me like you are "settleing for second best" with regards to DO instead of MD.

if you really honestly are wanting to go DO instead of MD now, then great, go for it. but also keep in mind, it is not normally a good thing to "get your name out there". it seems schools are more interested in first time applicants because they know from last year the repeat applicants didnt get in so the school will be looking for vast improvement. and then if you do not have that vast improvment, you may be rejected again anyways without a secondary.

in the end, schools have a primary and secondary deadline this late for a reason... and if you are positive about choising osteopathy for the rest of your life, then you must have a really kick a$$ reason so make sure the adcoms know that reason.

good luck with whatever you do... dont worry about the decision so much, its only the rest of your life! hah 😛

Dear Amox,

i say go ahead and apply. I applied to DO schools feb 14, completed my secondaries that month (i believe western has their secondary online) and interviewed and received my acceptance in Late march. I say go for it...sometimes its too late, but in my case it wasnt. Good luck!😉

im lost on this point though. the NYCOM and NJ both have deadlines of Feb 1st. but the aacomas will take a few weeks to process my application. Must i submit the aacomas application by Feb 1st or must they receive it by Feb 1st.? thanks

its not full now. thanks

Don't first or second guess anything. If it's within deadline limit, just do it. You have an option to say thing the way it is or the way you think people'd like to hear. You might want to try both Tucom and COMP in Cali. Both schools appear practical and understanding. Especially TUCOM, there may be an extra opportunity in the new facility in Las Vegas. Search for TUCOM threads. Someone named Bryan E. is always helpful.

It sounds like Tucom would prefer a letter of recommendation from any physician, MD or DO, whoever knows applicant for a longer period of time. COMP most likely has the same idea but doesn't say it.

Your GPA is great. It can make up for the MCAT that is a point or two below acceptance averages at these two schools.

BTW, You might hit a jackpot if no one from your undergrad school in NY? has applied for, or been accepted at one of these two Cali schools this cycle.

Good luck.
