Hey guys,

I recently decided to apply to DO schools, and the only one that I can still apply for is Western. I know its late, but is it still poss. to have a good shot at it?

my stats in general
3.5gpa
26mcat (7 in PS -- boo 🙁

any advice you could offer would be appreciated

btw...i've applied to allopathic schools, so i don't think the app. should be too difficult since i already have my Personal statement and all the secondary essays...

thanks

Your numbers are alright. Nobody can predict the chance you have. Just try and be your best. Good luck.

I know for a fact that there are still spots remaining at COMP.

If you haven't submitted your AACOMAS, it -may- already be too late. AACOM takes 4-6 weeks to process your transcripts and other such nonsense (I know because I also recently decided to apply to COMP and had to wait a while for AACOM).

Even with the 4-6 weeks processing time, you could probably get it in by 4/15, just be aware that AACOM takes their time to process your app and mail it, and that it may not make it by the deadline.

If you don't mind risking the $155 to apply, I say go for it. BTW, Touro-MI has the same deadline, so you should be able to apply there as well, just submit your applications NOW because 4/15 is rapidly approaching.

Good luck

really the only thing that's holding be back is the $155 app. fee

also, the deadline for Touro MI hasn't past yet? I thought they all had, but i'll double check

Call and see what the schools say. I think TUCOM and Western/U COMP have deadlines about 30 days away. $155 is not a huge some of money when you are giving yourself another shot to get into med school this cycle. Talk to your family and friends and get that money and stay on AACOMAS until you finish the primary. Send your transcripts today.

PS is much shorter on AACOMAS
2ndry you should be able to explain your interests in osteopathic schools/medicine.

Let us know how it goes.

The avg GPA here is 3.5 and MCAT is 9, so you should be fine in terms of stats. I think we also like people from UCLA, because it seems like there are tons of bruins here, so that should work in your favor.

Good Luck.

When I applied to schools at the end of January, an AACOMAS rep said application processing time had been reduced to 2-3 wks. You should be fine on the deadline. Good luck!

if i remember correctly, dont u need a DO LOR for western? might be something to consider before applying if u dont have one.

wait i think they take either MD or DO, can someone confirm.

md is okay, apply, I think you have a %90 chance of getting in. You just have to get everything together quick.

DO is preferred, but they will take an MD. The secondary is available online, which is good, but it is fairly comprehensive. You'll spend some time on it if you decide to fill it out. The LOR requirements are spelled out pretty well in the secondary and you'll want to make sure that the directions are followed precisely.

I only had a letter from M.D.

i was accepted and only had an MD letter as well.

remember though, your personal statement should have some indication that you know and understand what osteopathic medicine is and why you're going this route. don't over do it though, that's what the secondaries are for 🙂 . you might also get a start on the western secondary as i remember it's pretty dang long.

good luck...

thanks everyone for the help..part of me just wants to wait this year out and see what happens with some of the interviews i've had...

the other part doesn't want to have to do this all over again next application season (all that $$)

i've been lucky to have 4 interviews.

--waitlisted at 2 so far (MSU-CHM and Creighton)
--no response yet from UCLA or UCLA-Drew

I don't know, it's kinda late already...i think this would hurt my chances...and say i did want to apply DO next cycle, i don't want to be a reapplicant at western

any advice?

As far as letters from classroom professors, do you think a letter from a professor whom I did research with would be acceptable? I did not actually take her class, but did research in her lab for two years. (I tried emailing the admissions office this question, but haven't heard back for a few days now.)

I would try to get a letter from someone who knows you well, and from what you say it sounds like your research professor would ideal. However, some schools want to know about you as a student, so I would be sure to get one from a course professor as well.

The secondary specifically states that if you don't have a pre-med committee letter then you nust have two letters from science professors and one from a non-science professor. In bold print,in capitol letters, and with the word ïnstructed" underlined it says, "THESE MUST BE FROM PROFESSORS WHO HAVE INSTRUCTED YOU AND THE RECOMMENDER SHOULD SPECIFY THE COURSES TAUGHT." That sounds pretty clear to me.

First of all, there's nothing wrong with being a re-applicant, even if you do become one. Secondly, I don't think your chances are as low as you're making it sound like. Yes it's not early in the process but based on what other applicants have said in this forum, they've heard that the class is not full yet. So the longer you wait, the later it becomes. You have gpa/mcat that's on par with the school average and you come from UCLA which is a good school that Western seems to like, so there's nothing to lose to apply.

I personally would advice against waiting for the next cycle, unless you have a school that you absolutely have to attend and don't mind waiting a year, and basically wasting a year of your future salary. Once you do become a physician, time is money. Let's say you become a gen surgeon and makes the average $240,000 a year, then you are basically throwing $240,000 down the drain by waiting for a year to become a surgeon. And by going to Western instead of your preferred MD choices, it's not like you are making a sacrifice by missing out on a good education, on the contrary I believe Western will prepare you and get you to be where you want to be, as long as you don't mind the initials behind your last name.

Give it a shot. Even if the class were approaching being full, Western attracts a fairly strong applicant pool on par with many MD schools, so a lot of them are holding onto seats waiting for their MD acceptances. Just in my class, I remember losing a few classmates during orientation and 1st week of school because they were taken off the waitlist at their preferred MD schools and Western had people flying in like the next day, off of the waitlists.
