Is it pretty competitive this year to get into a DO school??

It's pretty darn late...you'd have to be extraordinarily lucky to stand any sort of chance....?

Why are you considering this this late?

Checking over your past history, I can't help but note 1) your poor standing with regards to everything relevant to Medical School 2) the fact that you obviously see DO as a second choice or backup -- you know, compensation for your laziness and for your stupidity.

Go away.

to the OP, I did not see anything wrong with your standing in regards to "everything relevant to medical school". If you want to go to a DO school, then it is always worth a shot to apply even if it is late in the cycle. If a DO school is your second choice, just make sure you would rather go to a DO school then wait a year and go to your top choice school. There is no way for ANY of us to tell you whether or not you will get accepted if you apply this late in the cycle. I always get so confused when people ask premed students questions that only the admissions committees of a school could answer. Good luck!

Medical school admission is competitive period. Since we are dealing primarily with rolling admissions, the later you apply, the worse your chances are. At this juncture, it's probably best to wait until the next application cycle so that you can maximize your chances and your options. It's generally a good idea to apply when you are at your strongest; this late in the game, your options and chances will likely be limited and diminished, more or less depending on your overall qualifications. There's no rush. Take the time to do it right.

Wait a minute dancer, are you saying I'm not all-knowing about the admissions process at each school? 😉

He applied and didn't get in to any MD schools...upon this awareness...he decided, "I'll apply to DO".

That offends me. That is what I'm referencing.

As someone already said, it is always competitive. The number of primary applications to DO schools has doubled in the past five years. That said, there are schools who interview all the way into April and people do get accepted all the way until then. So....in theory, it is not too late to apply. However, you have to be a truly qualified candidate in order to get consideration.

as someone that has three DO's in her family and has always known she wanted to be a DO, I agree. On the other hand, I have seen a few people that went to a DO school as a backup and did not know a whole lot about the profession who are really happy about their decision now. So, as I wish these people would have taken some time to look into what a DO actually is before applying, I am happy they finally realized that it was a good decision.
