Hi all,

If I apply by October 1st, what are my chances of getting into a mid-tier MD program?

3.35 GPA (strong upward trend, 3.6 my junior year and 3.7 my senior year, A in physiology, A in anatomy, A in research course, A- in O Chem 2, no grade lower than a B+ throughout my junior and senior year)

34 MCAT (11P, 10V, 13B)

2 years AmeriCorps experience (not health related, tutoring low-income kids in math and science, founded an internal math tutoring program, ran summer programs)

3 summers volunteering at hospital

microbiology lab assistant

internship at Pfizer developing ELISA test

lots of tutoring-specific EC's

Thanks

Submitting your primary October 1st or secondaries?

Neither great but significant difference still.

primaries

Why can't you submit your primary right now? Is your PS written?

It's going to take a month+ to get verified. Submitting now won't even guarantee you verification before October.. Submitting in October means you will be THE LATEST batch of applications most schools will see (not to mention you will be in danger of missing some deadlines).

if you are deadset on applying.. apply now and start pre-writing secondaries in the meantime. Remember, you just need a PS, a transcript and your work/activities section. You can have LORs follow the primary after it is submitted.

There will be people who get accepted and fill up slots in medical schools that you are applying to, possibly before you finish your secondaries. It is really late at this point in the game, IMO.

I agree but at the end of the day, you only need ONE seat in ONE medical school to make the cycle worth it.

You are hurting your chances severely applying this late but if you REALLY want to be in medical school this time next year.. go for it. You risk being a re-applicant so make sure you use the next year to continue improving your app (even with pending decisions).

What do you guys think about adding more schools now ? I am thinking of adding 2 more schools... Think it'd be worth it? Or am I just donating money at this point?

Go for it.

Realize they are still only in mid-July verification wise.

That means you are only applying "behind" people from June 29th (or whenever they released primaries) and 3-4 weeks later. Lotta people but not that crazy.

Your chances are low for a mid-tier at this point. I had a higher GPA and slightly higher MCAT, and I didn't get in anywhere submitting my primary in October 2010, and admissions are only getting harder. Then again, you have better EC's than I did at that point, so you may have more luck. If you insist on applying this year, apply very broadly to low and mid-tier only. And submit now, not October 1.

I think you should apply next cycle. And if you do apply this cycle, you better apply to 30+ schools. Applying to 10 will = most likely not getting in and wasting money. It's all or nothing at this point.

While technically it is possible for you to get into a high or mid tier school it is far less likely than if you submitted earlier. Unless if you have specific lower-tier or state schools that you have a strong preference for, and a special connection to, I would hold off for a year. That being said, if you have time and money, and don't care too much about ranking you could always send out a bunch of applications this cycle and see what happens. It's a question of how much you can afford to spend.
