I've just been introduced to a Doc who graduated from the top school of my choice. He finished his residency a year ago and he's willing to let me shadow him for a while. Is it too late to shadow a doc and get a LOR now?

Another thing is that he's an anesthesiologist but I am interested in pediatric. Does this really matter to admcom?

Thanks,

joe

No, it shouldn't matter that he's an anetsthesiologist. The adcoms want to feel comfortable that you have some idea of what medical school is like before you enter medical school. Lots of premeds have no real idea of what medicine is really like, and shadowing gives you a general glimpse into the profession. So it doesn't matter what the doctor's speciality is. Most premeds have no idea what they want to specialize in so it's not so important. The worst thing that happens by shadowing the doc is that you gain experience FOR YOURSELF. You should want to shadow for your own benefit, not just to make the adcoms feel good about you.

Are you applying this cycle? If so, by the time he can write you a genuine letter of rec, you'd be quite far into the secondary cycle.

I agree 100% with Mike..do it for yourself and see what you get out of it. include it on your apps and hav ehim write you a LOR and tha tshould be an added bonus. But don't do it just for the app or they will see right thru that. Good luck

Thanks for the replies. 🙂

I have shadowed before but this doc graduated from the med. school I really want get in to. I thought it would be a lot better if I get a LOR from him.

Thanks,

Joe

p.s. yes, I am applying for 2005.
