I am applying to Family Practice and I may want to apply to psychiatry programs. However, I have a audition psychiatry rotation in September intended to give me a better idea on whether I want to do psych, and in order to obtain a LOR.

My question is, should I wait til the end of sept to submit my application, or should I just go ahead and submit my application sept 1st like a good med student. I kind of would like to save the money in applying to a bunch of psych programs.

Can I apply to family practice programs on sept 1st and then add psychiatry at the end of the month if I chose to.

Thanks for your help!

Yes you can and should do it that way. If you do your psych rotation and realize that's what you love, just w/d from the FP programs or just decline any interviews. You can also apply to more FP programs later if you decide that psych isn't for you and you want to apply more broadly.

Keep in mind that when you apply to a 2nd specialty it is priced the same as the first. So if you apply to 10 FP and 10 Psych programs, you pay $65 for the FP and $65 for the Psych.
