Hi guys,

So I was looking into ophtho earlier but switched gears abruptly midway through 3rd year. Now i'm in my 4th year and am reconsidering ophtho. Its most likely too late to set up any away rotations, but I'd be able to get one letter from an ophthomologist at my home institution. My question: is it too late at this point to try to land an ophtho spot? Is an away rotation absolutely necessary or can I get away without doing one?

Thanks so much!

An away is not even remotely necessary to land an ophtho spot. A very good friend of mine went to a school where he did his home Ophtho program (and it's not a top 10 Ophtho program) and no aways. He got interviews at PLENTY of great programs (Baylor, Wills, Emory, Duke, UPenn, UTSW to name a few)...matched just fine (#1 or #2 choice)....probably doesnt hurt that he's a genuine guy, very nice, and personable...and no he wasnt MD/PhD, a rocket scientist, or anything insane...just a very good student at a quality medical school

It's not really too late to sign up for aways, but they just won't be early enough for you to get letters.
