Is it true that people get into medical school because they are friends with somebody that knows people in high ranking or on the board at the medical school?

As far as I know, yes. But other people can get in too, don't worry. 😉
 
I'm sure people get in that way, but no one I know did.
 
I personally know someone who applied to over 10 schools, was rejected outright from 9, and interviewed and accepted at 1. The dean of the school that offered this person an interview/acceptance personally knew this kid. So yes, I think it does happen.
[as an aside, I do post on here frequently, but created a new user to add this comment. The person I am referring to might be on SDN and knows who I am, so....]
 
my aunt is on the adcom for UMich, and i wasnt even invited for an interview there, and my stats are fairly good, got into some UCs and cleveland clinic, etc., so its not a shoe in thats for sure
