Is it worth mentioning if only did research for one semester?

I signed up for research this semester and don't know if I will be able to continue it through summer and fall semester because I will be studying for DAT through the summer and might not have enough time to help out with research. Therefore, if I can't come back during summer, my professor might not need me anymore. So, I am wondering should I even note down on my application that I did research for half a semester? Thanks

if you contributed to the research AND can talk about it intelligently, then note the research. "contributed" does not mean cleaning glassware.

if you list research you may be asked to talk about it during an interview. if you sound like a ******, then kiss your spot at d-school gooooodbyeeeeeeeeeeee.

best of luck,
jb!🙂

I agree with this guy

Make sure you know what you did with you research, what your objectives were, and roles, etc. I am currently in a research project now, and I will be active with it for 1.5 years. I also need to present our findings to a international convention end of this semester..:scared:

Are you actually conducting/participating in a study? If you are then mention it for sure and as stated above be clear what your role was and what was expected of you. Or are you simply volunteering in a lab and helping out? If its the latter than you should also make that clear.

for most, 1 semester is not enough time to do "meaningful" research. and like most said, you HAVE to be able to talk intelligently about what you have contributed. if not then you will just sound like an idiot and will give a reason for the adcom to be picky with you.

I did research for one semester, but it was cut short because the professor I was working with left the university. Out of the three schools I interviewed at, only one interviewer brought up the research. The only risk I see is that your experiments will lack the amount of resolve other researchers have from longer ones. I could tell that the interviewer was dissappointed that the experiment did not have a chance to answer some very good questions had it been allowed to progress. All I can say is know what question your experiments are designed to answer and talk about whatever results you have intelligently.

By the way, I was admitted to the school.

Why can't you do both? I remember a lot of down time in the lab that was very conducive to studying.

Include it.

I had a few semester and summer-long projects that helped my application. The interviewers asked about the content of the projects and never once asked about the time scale.

yes!!

Thanks everyone for your input. I am currently just helping out, not involve in any projects. I am learning how to run western blot and extraction of RNA. I don't think I will be able to participate on any project since I am still new. So if it comes up at interviews (by that time), it's ok if I explain to them that I run gels, western blotting, and rna/dna extraction? Thanks

Yes, you can just say that you participated by performing those tests. As TexDDS stated, there's really no reason you should have to put off doing research to study for the DAT though.

I think a lot of people embellish aspects of their applications so anything you can do to beef it up is definitely worthwhile.

Anyhow, just make sure you can back it up.
