Is spending $1400 for Kaplan Prep Course worth it? I need to improve my score by two points at least (17 to 19)! If you were in my situation (DAt score wise) and took Kaplan Class, did it work? Is it worth it? All comments are welcome!

Personally, I thought it was a waste. Yes, Kaplan gives you a large battery of questions, but I didn't find it too useful. I don't know if you have taken the DAT, but I found it rather straight forward to the point that Kaplan didn't help me much.

License2kill thank you for your reply. How many times did you take the dat? At one of my interview, it was suggested to me to take the class. I am hoping that the class will give me the discipline, timeline, and repetition I need since I have a family and full-time job!

I took the Kaplan course and I would not recommend spending the money for the course. Kaplan offers great resources but the classroom part of it is not worth it.

quite simply, NO. like the above poster mentioned, the materials are good, but anything you would get out of the class is in the book. Go spend some dough on DAT review books, and do Top Score and that other online one. Do as much practice as you can, but I think 1400 is ridiculous. spend like 200 max or whatever you have to on materials and then spend the 1200 left over on a vacation. back when i took, only like 3 yrs ago, it was 1200, and i wouldn't have recommended it then, and don't now either.

Too much money. You could purchase lots of materials that would be great to use.
Motavation should not be an issue at this point, especially one that takes over a grand to correct.

Absolutely not, I wouldn't spend more than like 50 bucks on kaplan material, its awful.

Except for KBB which I found to be very well structured. I would advise everyone to use this study tool for primary studying. Then you can decide to use other materials to deal with any holes you get through your studying.

I personally took the class, and if I were to do it all over again, I would've LOVED to still have that money in the bank!!!! Kaplan is really not representable of how the real exam is. I say keep the money, and study on your own and buy useful resources. CDP is good, I recommend to do all the practice problems in the Destroyer and make sure you read thoroughly through the explanations. Also, Topscore is good too to help with time management. Best of luck, and take it when your ready!!

Im in kaplan class now..Class is a waste of time. KBB is excelent. Get destroyer, crack DAT PAT, achiever top score.

I had a roommate that took the class and he gave me his materials after he was finished (got <18 by the way). I had already bought the Kaplan "study alone" book and was shocked to see that the information was all the same! The course provided no additional skeleton for science information. In my opinion, the Kaplan book is not nearly as thorough as you need to do well. I would spend some of that money on different study materials, ie textbooks, Schaum outlines, Crack PAT software, which won't cost you nearly as much and will help you much more.

I had 2 friends take it and one got an 18, the other a 17. Personally, I studied on my own over christmas break and got a 22. I think a lot of people do Kaplan hoping that the Kaplain fairy will make them DAT killers which just isn't the case. When it comes down to it, you get out of it what you put in. From everything I've heard, you might as well save $1000+ and just set aside several hours a day (or week, depending on your schedule) and learn what you need to learn. Save your money and use motivation as your tool for success on the DAT.

Thanks everyone for your response. A friend gave me all the books and the test bank from when he took the kaplan class. I am leaning towards getting Destroyer, and other DAT simulating softwares and save the money. Thank y'all!

I took it and loved the course, it helped to stay on schedule not motivated. Well worth the investment.

it said on the website stating that "guaranteed higher score. If your score doesn't improve you can take the class as many times and money back." It sounds promising don't u guys think so?

I took the class. It was not worth 1400 dollars. The material is good but class itself was waste. I would recommend spending that money on DAT destroyer, CDP, and other resources.

grldent- but my question is would they seriously give money back, if you dont like your score?

The will give you your money back IF you do not score higher than you do on the diagnostic given at the beginning of the class. The diagnostic is on paper and IS easier than the real thing, which plays to the student's advatage should they want to do the high score guarantee. However, hardly anyone studies for that, so most do very poorly.

If you score higher but are not satisfied, and have completed all of the required online resources (which is really what you pay for with Kaplan because there are so many online quizzes and tests, not the classroom portion) then you can take the course again.

Just thought I would clarify.

yah, if you can take it as much as you can until you are satisfied..... Don't you guys think it is a good deal?

I didn't read any posts in this thread, but Kaplan is a great foundation for the DAT. If you put in the work outside of class, you will do well. The online resources are fantastic and the explanations to the answers are crucial to success. It's a very efficient way to study. Sure, reading Campbell's Biology may be more 'comprehensive', but that will take you a year to digest all that material and most of it you won't see on the test. Kaplan is to the point, and will help you with the exact topics that will come up on test day. Purchase the course if you can afford it. If you can't: work for a month during the summer and try to earn money so you can purchase the course.

The online materials are more helpful than the classroom. You are not obligated to go to class.

I agree, online Kaplan course is great (it helped me get a 21). It's like $700. The $1400 for the class is a waste. If you want Kaplan, do the online course, and the rest of the money can be spend on Destroyer, Achiever, TopScore, ect.
