is med school fun?

Med school is totally fun. How else can you affix your school ID to your chinos and throw a white coat over your shoulder and expect free beer to flow freely from the taps and first-year hotties to cling to your every word.

I'm going to have to go with a big negative on that one. It is not fun. I miss going to college football games, partying all the time, going to the lake, you know, the fun stuff in life. Not a big fan of going to class everyday and then coming home and studying until I go to bed...day in and day out. So in comparision to undergrad no it's not fun. On the other hand, when I'm actually seeing patients and going on rounds or doing ward service instead of actually doing the "book work" then yes that is the fun part and what I look forward to every week. I would never give that up.

The first 2 years certainly are not fun at all. If you think they are, you led a very dull, empty life before going to med school. Third and fourth years seem like they could be entertaining despite being tiring as hell.

The "social scene" exists in medical school. If you're not experiencing it (especially during MS1-2) then you are doing something wrong.

The fact that a social scene exists does not make med school fun. You have very little time to enjoy said scene.

In terms of schooling part yes this is true, in terms of the social life outside of school I think you'd have more time in M1 and 2 to do things you like, such as my friends that go to the salsa or swing dance clubs, or the people who want to go to bars and go drinking when they have free time, or the people who want to do other outside things. And some newer curricula like at FIU and UCF are incorporating this thing in their academic curricula where you get involved with something that you can work on a project on that does not necessarily have to be related to medicine so it can be research or it can be something related to teaching or music, etc.

So in that aspect it could be some what fun.

But it depends on what we are talking about again? The schooling aspect or the social aspect to determine what years are more fun. And also what curricula are just pure hard science and which ones incorporate mini concentrations or these independent projects.
How very pseudo-intellectual of you. The original question was quite simple.

If you define any of your "schooling" in the first 2 years as "fun," you have issues or you're so unbelievably intelligent that you don't need to study and have a bunch of free time. I really like my friends, but we had very few opportunities to get together and relax last year. Hanging out while under massive stress is not fun. Also, if the best thing you can think of to do with what little free time you have is to start a school-related project, you drastically need to expand your horizons.

School itself is occasionally but not always fun (good days in clinic, truly applicable lectures, etc), but life during MS1 and MS2 can be quite enjoyable.

During my first year, I found plenty of time to enjoy the things I loved. There was time to go out with classmates, play sports, find new hobbies, and (in my case) even do some part time work. I imagine this varies from person to person and from school to school, but yes. So far, I would classify my life during medical school as "fun".

No....it is no fun at all. The first two years are, in my opinion, miserable. Third and fourth year are a blast. I am having so much fun especially now as a 4th year.

I have a great time in med school. I'm talking about the actual school part. It's not jump out of a plane fun, but I think it's extremely enjoyable. Granted, I go to a pure PBL school, so the learning is more active. I'm not sure if I would enjoy med school with a different curriculum.

qft. Relative to undergrad/grad school, the first two years aren't too fun. Studying with people is fun sometimes, but you have to really buckle down and study when you do study...not like 'social undergrad' studying. Third year kinda sucks since you have to study for shelf exams constantly. Fourth year kicks butt, but a lot of time your close friends will be off on aways, or doing different things so you can't always all hang out...still the best of the 4 though.

It's the people you surround yourself with that will make med school fun or not, even when you are burned out and tired. I tried hanging out with some the gunner types/cool kids in class early on, but I found that I fit in better with the chilled out, relaxed kids. I have had more laughs and hilariousness in med school, because of these awesome people--more than i ever imagined.

This should be bronzed.

To the OP; hell, yes Medical School is fun. Is it always fun? No. Make hay when it's time to make hay and relax when it is time to relax.

Medical School is hard, but it's not like you have to trek to Mordor to destroy the ring or anything. I mean seriously, by the way some people talk on here, you would think that getting an MD requires a whipping pole.

Everything in life part suckage and fun. It's the ying and the yang. The bad times make you appreciate the good.

Just go in with a good attitude and don't be afraid to laugh at yourself and your surroundings.

At any rate:

I'm probably happier than I've ever been. I feel like I am studying to be what I want to be, my classmates are awesome, I see my girlfriend often enough to keep me sane (though I would like to see her more often), and I get to escape back to my undergrad t watch football games every other weekend. I have time to exercise, study, research, go out to dinner with friends, and relax. It certainly isn't easy all the time, but it is deeply satisfying.

However, I do think whether or not med school will make you happy is highly dependent on the individual. The people I see that are enjoying life here are those that would probably be happy doing anything. However, work-life balance is something that is highly stressed at my school.

Haha, that was awesome... 👍

I've had fun first two years.. the best part is that I can skip class whenever I want and go do something fun. mostly though I miss a lot of the social interaction I had in undergrad, working as a waiter, etc. Working in the hospital will fix this. just my personality, I'm happiest when I'm walking around meeting tons of new people, *doing something* rather than just sitting around studying (although it's good to learn of course).

I am having as much fun as being railed by Zed and mr.hillbilly in the caudal region, everyday.

Everyday is an anatomy day.
