Hi guys, so I will probably skip all of the introduction and stuff of how I have gotten to this and get straight to the point. I have met many people who planned to enter dental school majoring in Biology mostly and some other science majors. My question is, would Nursing make a better gateway for dental school as well as a back up route for falling back just in case things don't work out as expected (I like being an CRNA or a dentist, however I think my passion for dentist is somehow greater)? I am majoring in microbiology right now (a major perfectly suitable for dental school, however definitely not a good major without further education), and am in my 2nd year already so I do not have much time left to for changes. If nursing is a possibility, I will get my BSN in two years, assuming I would get accepted in my first try (since I have gotten all the chemistry, math and bio stuff done, just A&P sequence left). I will finish all of the required classes for dental school (including A&P sequence) in another year after getting BSN, then I will work as a nurse while preparing for DAT and apply for dental schools. I know that with medical school, a nursing degree is kinda a disadvantage and some schools even look down on applicants with nursing degrees. However, as for dental school, I think there isn't gonna be that kind of situations since nursing and dentistry aren't that closely related, thus it is more reasonable and understandable to be switching from nursing to dentistry from one's perspective. I am really not being negative or in doubt about my own ability to become successful as a microbiology major, however, there isn't nothing wrong with being realistic and extra careful. 🙂🙂

I would personally stick with the Pre dent major. I don't see much sense in putting so much effort into a contingency plan. My back up plan was law school since they'll take any major that does well on the LSAT. I wanted to make sure I did as much as I could to get into Dschool... and it paid off. 🙂 Good luck!

It's best to have one goal and not two. Both fields have similarities but the differences are far greater. Stick to whichever you feel will suit you best; although it should be pointed out that there are a few members on here who were accepted nursing majors.

I think you should do whatever you feel: interests you more, whichever will give you the highest GPA, and whichever you can finish faster. As long as you have a good GPA and DAT, your major wont matter.

However, in hindsight, i might have chosen a nursing major. Especially, if you have a year off before applying. Making some good cash that year would come in handy. Not to mention, you could make great part time income while in dschool working just one 8 hour shift a week or on breaks (which i think would be very doable).

Go for dentistry it's best to have one one mind set and tell yourself that you WILL be a dentist.

Pick one thing (not nursing & dental at same time).
