Hi everyone, I am a Navy HPSP student. Is it mandatory to apply for a residency if you are in the Navy?
thank you

That is the Army policy. The Navy does NOT require you to apply for PGY-1 (AEGD or GPR) or any residency.

del Sol - do you typically know how popular/competitive it is to secure a Navy GPR/AEGD? from my research, there is ~68 (24 GPR/ 44 AEGD) slots per year and ~85 (65 HPSP and 20 HSCP) new dentist grads per year? Sound about right?

I don't know any exact numbers, but your numbers sound plausible. What I do know is that, because of the neutral payback year and the fact that applying is not mandatory, Navy PGY-1 programs are really not that competitive. Most new dentists elect to do a credentialing tour. GPR tours may be a little more competitive than AEGD because people use it as a stepping stone into OMFS. If you want to do an AEGD, and you aren't screw-up, you can probably do one. I had pretty mediocre dental school grades with pass/fail boards, and I still got selected for my second choice AEGD.

I don't know what you mean by 'mediocre' but, don't you HPSP folks need to maintain at least a 3.0? or do you have a little more wiggle room? ( I am told to maintain 2.5 for HSCP but I'd feel a lot better if I don't have to do so 🙂

thanks.

When I was HPSP, we did not need to maintain a 3.0 GPA. We were merely required to pass, which was a 2.0 at my school. I can't speak for HSCP requirements.
