Is obtaining a pathology residency difficult for a DO?

Nope. I met DO path residents at various schools during the interview trail and they said they never experienced any issues during the application process, as long as you aim to strengthen your application the same way as any other applicant.

I interviewed at MGH (they interview a few people per day) and one of the other candidates was a DO student. Smart person, but it didn't sound like their application had anything hugely outstanding, so it seems DO status isn't that much of a hindrance if you are a good candidate.

I also have met a couple of DO attendings at academic centers.

Good luck.

I work with a pathology resident (MD) whose brother is a DermPAth DO. So I guess it is definitely possible!

We took 3 DOs last year. Our program treats them no different than MD applicants. But, I would say that is very program dependant...I have heard of programs that will not even interview DOs.
