I'm not sure if its worth taking two semesters of anatomy and physiology just to fulfill the prerequisites for OHSU. I have all my other pre-reqs done for every other dental school and I know OHSU is the only school that requires the year-long sequence of a&p. I do love Portland and Oregon in general and qualify for WICHE, but I'm not sure its worth the 8 semester hours or the mixed feedback I hear about OHSU.
I'd appreciate any opinions.

i agree, do it so d school will be easier, not for OHSU. Even though the school cafeteria has some wicked good cheeseburgers (mmmm... tillamook), the school itself was pretty depressing to me. This isnt the case for everyone, but it definitely wasnt a good match for me

I decided to take A&P 1 this semester so that I could apply at OHSU. To be honest with you I'm not sure I would do it again. It has a bad reputation at my school. They sort of treat it like boot camp for nursing students, so its a pretty time consuming class, a real PITA. It's not hard, just a PITA, lots of memorization. If you have a light schedule don't sweat it. I threw it on top of biology calculus and physics, and it eats up more of my time than any of those three. It sucks.

I do agree it should help you in dental school, probably more than any of the other classes.

I took A&P only because the the admission committee stressed it. Let me take a "Rumsfeld" approach to the situation, hopefully that will help you.

Was the class a pain, yes. Would I do it again, yes. Did I enjoy the class, no. Did it count towards my major, no. Did I spend more time on A&P than Biochemistry and O-Chem II combined, yes. Do I feel it has helped me, yes. Was it difficult, no. Was it time consuming, HELL YEAH.

Got any more questions?

I was in the same boat. Got WICHE, didn't take A&P, but love Portland (had I applied it would have been my 2nd or 3rd choice), but I decided not to take A&P, not because of the work load, but because I didn't want to take a class that didn't count for my major. I just wanted to graduate and get the heck out of undergrad, and I'm happy I did, because I get to live it up a bit before the next four years. - had I had space in my schedule to take it, and still graduate on time, I probably would have, unfortunately, I took a lot of classes that I didn't need during my fr. and soph. years, leaving me with no electives for jr. and sr. years.

I took it so that I could apply to OHSU. OHSU wasn't my first choice, but it was still A choice. Plus, I figured I needed to learn all the material anyway. So, taking A&P expanding my application options and will give me a head start when I take Gross anatomy in dental school. (theoretically, at least -- ask me again next year :> )

hmmm. Another issue, the only time I could take a&p would be at 7:30 AM. Could there be even less of an incentive?!

If waking up early, having an intense schedule, and not being interested are reasons one is not taking A&P, one should rethink the whole D-school idea. Call me crazy, but I think D-school will be a lot more demanding than an undergrad, require you to go to class early and it might even require you to know a thing or two about human anatomy.

I wouldn't recommend going to OHSU. OHSU is an earshot away from my hometown.

Yet, when I interviewed at OHSU in mid-January, the student who had lunch with me told me that the dental lab requirements at OHSU is pure torture.

You do ALL the dental labwork by yourself, compared to other dental schools where you do some of the dental lab work, and the rest is sent off to a dental lab to be completed.

This is why I'm not going to attend OHSU's dental school this year.

So, you don't want to go to OHSU because a student said it was hard? If I used that as a criterion for selecting dental schools, well, I wouldn't have been able to apply to any

Granted, I expect to work my butt off in dental school, but there is nothing that aggravates me more than back-breaking work which is at least avoidable, and at the most unnecessary. I think taking A&P will be worth it in the end, but probably not for the sake of attending OHSU. 😎
