Hi everyone, this isn't something I saw in any other thread, so I thought I would ask:

What is the occupational hazards of a being a "Pharmacy Student"?

I ask this because I want to get into Epi Research, not bench research. I also do not want to work Retail Pharmacy. However, I am suspecting that somewhere during the PharmD rotations, I would be exposed to chemicals. I am someone who have multiple chemical sensitivities and I am just wondering if PharmD route might not be a good one with this issue. Or maybe there are work-arounds?

Thoughts?

There are many avenues in pharmacy, however be aware that most jobs are in retail, so if the idea of even standing in a retail pharmacy is terrifying, I would reconsider. Yes, I know there's hospital, industry, etc. but like I said, most jobs tend to be in retail.

It depends on what type of chemical sensitivities you're referring to. Care to explain? Because there may somewhat different routes of "exposure" to chemicals in a pharmacy setting/rotation/etc.

You will be exposed to sick patients. Anything health care related careers have to contact with patients at some point. It may not be for you if this is the case.

Also, there are certain drugs that are dangerous such as chemotherapy drugs. Also, there are drugs that induce allergies through inhalation. I've seen some but not that many.

IMHO, Pharmacy has probably the least "patient contact" so-to-speak (i.e., actually physically touching the patients). Chemotherapy in general is usually rare unless you're specialized in that field. Oral chemotherapy is more common nowadays, especially in an outpatient/community setting.
