Probably. The criteria for sitting the exam are listed here.

As long as the medical school you attended are acceptable to the Medical Council of Canada (who administers the exam), you can sit the EE and QEI quite simply. To sit the QEII, however, you need to have completed 12 months of residency training.

So you'd do the EE and QEI, then apply for residency. Once you got a residency position, you'd do the QEII after the initial 12 months of training.

It's not easy to get a residency position as an IMG, although it is possible. Last year, 21% of IMGs who applied got residency positions here in Canada. The www.carms.ca website has all the information. Having the EE and QEI upfront will be helpful, though they won't guarantee you will be offered a spot.

You need to hear the truth about getting a medical license in Canada for an IMG in order that you don't waste your time and your money. The CPSBC in Vancouver on it's staff have some of the most arrogant people who have delusions of their own self importance. You treated like some criminal even if you ask for an application form for getting a physician license at that's from a US graduate like me!
Do NOT waste your time as an IMG trying to practice in Canada.
However the best way for you to practice medicine now which is even better and more fulfilling in terms of salary and practice is to go to the generous USA.
I recommend that you take USMLE 1 and 2, apply to ECFMG and get a residency in the USA. Then when you're in the USA get a license and come back to Canada. Faster, easier, less hassle and you won't go crazy dealing with the arrogant Canadian medical regulators.

I agree on what MontereyMD mentioned above. During the last 2 years, as a PR, I passed MCCEE and QEI. And in the mean time, I finished USMLE step 1-3. Eventually, I plan to go to US 2010 match because I just cannot wait to go through the complex and lengthy 'assessment process' here in Canada. However, be aware that it will take at least 2-3 years to have everything ready, and MCCEE will help you obtain a J1 visa, which adds more chances to your US match. Good luck.

Somewhat harsher than I might have put it, but certainly the point is well taken:

Vancouver is probably the most desirable (and expensive!) city in which to live in Canada. There are likely a great many physicians (IMG and otherwise) begging at the door for licenses. As a result, the University of British Columbia, the College and Vancouver employers can be (and apparently are) extremely picky about who they want.

Ergo, it would be wise not to just apply for residency in BC, but also widely throughout Canada. A US residency, as mentioned above by both Dokcn and Monterey, is generally easier to achieve.

As far as coming back to Canada as a US board-certified specialist, it seems that Monterey has some experience in this, and it doesn't sound like it went smoothly. (I can't claim any experience in this area at all). So there is some uncertainty regardless of the path you choose.

Hi Monterey, could you please expand on the process of being licensed after a US IM residency ? I read about the 4th pathway of Ontario for IMGs with US training. It sounds cool, but I just Don't trust Canadians !!!! Is this doable or a trap like everything else dealing with IMG regulations ?

I am applying for the 2011 match and would like to settle in Canada after being US board certified.

If anyone else with experience, please do leave a comment here 🙂
