Lots of AOAs from my school applied this cycle to DR. According to the AMRAS chat, many people with 25x/26x and honors in 3rd year have received no or few interview invites. Could anyone close to the admissions process comment on the number and quality of applicants? Thanks.

I'm not that close to the selection process. I heard in passing from a PD that applications are on par with most years.

Regarding interview invites, I wouldn't read into it at all. From what I recall, schools can't even upload their dean's letters (MSPE) until 10/1. Therefore, programs have had < 24 hrs to review completed applications. Most interview invites come through (mid-to-late) October and November.

It's just that some programs send invitations even before MSPEs are available (which shows how much they're valued, haha).

I think it's more and more competitive bc of IR. IR is just exploding and many people of those ppl have DR as backup.

Was less competitive last year than the previous cycle no clue about this year tho. Your school might just be an extreme

Ayy i got that reject too. But yea its been brutal for me this year.
5 interviews only so far.

Damn really? What are your stats... range wise if you're not comfortable sharing specifics.

26x, 27x,
Cdn img though so obvious negative on my app. IDK expected more I guess but who knows haha

I am curious as well about the competitiveness this year. I only have 8 interviews. 239/244. 573/685 levels. I have Little research which is a ding but brutal for me so far. I am a DO and hoping that don’t matter as much now.

Hey, I had a few questions. Do you mind DMing me, I can't seem to DM you.

I think you can relax because 8 interviews should correlate with a > 90% chance of matching

The ERAS statistics will give you a better sense of the competitiveness this year.

The number of applicants is lower but, because of overapplication, programs are getting higher volumes of applications. I think the match rate will be slightly higher but people will on average go farther down their rank list.

Thanks! Are there any statistics on the breakdown of where DR applicants match on their rank list?

Can you explain why you think on average people will match lower on their list?

There are not statistics that break down the rank-matched by specialty. Ask the NRMP if they would do this, as they do for all the fellowship matches.

I know in general, not specifically in radiology, recent years have seen an increase in applications sent per applicant, interviews attended per applicant, and programs ranked per applicant. At the same time, the match rate has been stable but the average rank at which people match is lower. I posit these are related, as people are applying more promiscuously, which to some degree translates to ranking more reach programs.

In radiology specifically, we also see an increase in applications per applicant, so my conjecture is that there is a similar phenomenon in which the match will be lower on the rank list on average. We will never know whether this is true until the NRMP releases the statistics for specialty-specific match by rank position.

I keep seeing the same people at interviews. I suspect that it’s harder in that more hording is going on at the top and fewer people are cancelling.

While that is true, IMO that means people will match higher on their list. “Reach programs” are still sending the same number of interview invites, so what happens is the “top of the heap” gets many more invites but the more “normal” applicants get fewer. If anything all it will mean is programs will match lower on THEIR list since many programs will be ranking highly the same people.
