How necessary is research experience in getting accepted to top 20 medical school?

Because the rankings are very heavily ranked on research/funding it would be a very nice thing to have. Not to say it is impossible, but much more difficult to get in without research. This is probably not going to apply for all top 20, but getting towards the top of the list.

maybe do it just to see if you'd like it, but don't bother sticking to it if you ha te it. they just want you to invest in fields in which you hold an interest. btw research isn't limited to the bench. research could be sociological studies, a history thesis, clinical work, stuff outside of medicine, etc. be creative! every cookie cutter premed shleps in the lab, they want to see people who played an ample role in lab or one in other types of research.

at one of my blind interviews at a top 10 school, my interviewer asked, "so tell me about your research" ... i replied, "how do you know i did research without having seen my application?" .. to which he said, "everyone does research" ... (i think he meant that anyone invited for interview must have had research experience) ......

my best friend goes to a top 20 and never stepped foot in a lab before .. i also have a good friend at an outstanding school who never did any research either .. but i'm only responding to your particular question about research and not the other components of your application ..
