Just wondering are the pharmacist allowed to sit down during their shift and do their job or are you required to stand the entire time?

Sorry if it was asked before, I did use the search function but couldn't find anything.

Pharmacists can sit if they want to but sitting generally slow down the work flow. At the pharmacy that I work at pharmacists usually sit at the end of the day when things slows down and they are allow to catch up with paperwork. I'm a pharm tech right now and I don't like to sit down bc I find that it slows down my work flow also. I mean.. I would just sit down and there will be a patient at the counter 🙂

Inpatient pharm that I volunteered at, a pharmacist would be sitting down for 70% of the time. Because 70% of the time, he would be entering doctors orders and then techs would bring him drugs to check. They would get up up to dispense percocet and things like that. I also heard in huge retail pharms, where 2-4 pharmacists are working at the same time, one pharmacist will have an assigned task. This task could be to Q.A drugs after a tech typed the labels and he would be sitting to do this.

pharmacists who work in industry, like primary benefit management places, ex. express scripts, or at an insurance company, ex. blue cross/blue shield, they have "desk jobs" where they sit down the majority of the time, working in prior authorization, drug utilization, emerging therapeutics...more pharmD knowlegde and paperwork, let patient contact and dispensing

well you're an adult so no one can tell you what you're not "allowed" to do. lol but anyway, from my experience in working as a retail pharm tech, pharmacists as well a techs usually stand because it keeps the flow going. i'm always running around the pharmacy grabbing drugs off the shelf, putting them back, typing scripts, talking to customers. but as soon as it slows down we sit if we want to.

Thanks for all the replys 🙂 I was just curious to know whether they were allowed to sit down! I've always had jobs where I sat for the bulk of the day so this will be a big change for me should I get into the profession.😀

Hospital pharmacy has positions that sit all day, and others that have a mixture of sitting and standing. For retail, it is generally standing all day, with the exception of doing paperwork.

~above~

The pharmacy I interned at was a Sav-on. Since pharmacy was not the primary purpose of the builing (inside Albertson's) it was slower than what I understand a normal retail pharmacy would be. I got to sit several times for several minutes on multiple occasions.

at the pharmacy i work in, the pharmacist IS NOT allowed to sit. the owners of the company came in and freaked out! they come in daily, it is a supermarket. no chairs allowed. i told hte pharmacist i dont know how u do 12 straight hours standing here.

I went from a primarily desk job to working the pharmacy, and honestly, it was a tough adjustment. My feet/legs hurt and were sore for a while after I'd get off from my shift. But then after about a month or so, I got used to it....and it helped me in the rest of my life, I now have more stamina standing around when I'm out traveling.

I guess standing up keeps you from getting "gnarly secretary's ***" if you're a girl. haha
