Is studying veterinary medicine abroad a good idea? I would like to travel and explore other countries but I'm not sure if I should mix studying with tourism. Any thoughts?

I'm just afraid that when I begin working as a vet I won't have the time or money (because of the loans I'll be paying) to take vacations to other countries.

Sure why not?! As long as the school is AVMA accredited and you apply and get in then there is no real reason it would be a bad idea. You can receive US Govt loans just like attending any state side vet school. It is much easier to travel (and cheaper) from the EU/UK vet schools and take holidays here without breaking the bank. Many vet students over here go on holiday to all different parts of Europe and the UK (and other places as well). All of the US/Canada vet students I know who are studying at UCD plan on traveling Europe at some point during their study over here.

if you are looking for the cultural experience and having the opportunity to see a bit of the world, then going abroad can be a great idea. these were things that i really wanted in addition to my DVM, and having the ability to combine them is fantastic. also, i think once you're down there, island hopping is pretty cheap and easy.

I really love being abroad. Granted, being away from home sucks sometimes, but it's convenient for travel. You can get super cheap flights to most locations in Europe, and it's relatively easy to find hostels or affordable hotels. If you're keen to travel, it's definitely worth looking into going to vet school abroad.
