AAMC average: 30

or is it better to take the mcat late in the summer and apply early next cycle?

Yes, it would take away your chance for the early cycle. You are still young and taking at the end of summer would help you in three ways: 1) Gives you a good full 3 months to dedicate to studying full time, 2) If you do not like your score, you have the opportunity to retake instead of waiting to the last minute, and 3) You would have everything ready (meaning Apps, PS, LORs, MCAT, etc.) for the early cycle next year.

Just make sure you do something productive during your year off. Just do not make the mistake of limiting yourself by applying late.
