Hello,
I wanted to give myself enough time to study for DAT. it's my first time taking it. I'm starting to study tomorrow, June 2 until August 9 and take the DAT on August 10. my overall gpa is on the low side...3.254. w/ my gpa, would taking DAT in August 10 be considered too late? i welcome and appreciate all advice. thanks!

I would only go as far as the first week of August but since August 10th isn't too far off I think you will be fine. Just send in your application early so the schools will have everything at hand except your scores.

another question: i heard it doesn't matter if you submit the application early if you're not going to have your DAT scores available until August, and so some ppl say submit application at around same time you take DAT. they say schools dont look at applications until they have DAT scores. anybody knows the accuracy of these claims? i'm working on my application and still gonna submit early...probably mid-late June.

it does make a difference - aadsas takes about 4-6 weeks to verify your transcipts and then sends yor apps to your desired schools. the earlier you submit your apps, the sooner the schools will get the rest of your application except yor scores, and what you can do is fax the schools your unofficial DAT report the day after your DAT so at least they have everything. u still need to send in your official DAT scores, but just fax your unoffical ones as well.

iwannabeadentist, so the school could invite you for an interview with unofficial DAT scores...before they get the official scores?

what would happen if this: dats were taken, decent score but could do better so im retaking in early september. i am applying in june but notifying all the schools that i will be taking the dats again in september... will this hurt my chances?

Hello,

I will be applying for entry in 2010 and my initial plan was to take US DAT in October so that I have enough time to study and get a decent score and also because the US schools say that they prefer DAT taken in October the latest. Based on what you all mentioned, it seemed that taking the DAT in October is a little late. Can someone give me some feedbacks?

Thanks!

Hello,

If everything goes well, I am hoping to enter dental school in Sept 2010. Sorry for duplicating my msg! My internet is sooo slow that I didn't know I posted the same msg twice!

October is way to late as school start sending out interviews starting September on rolling admission status, so the later you apply the less chance you have after the initial interviews.

Meas, I wouldn't recommend taking DATs October since that is VERY late. Unless you have stellar GPA and DAT scores wait until next year to apply. Otherwise send in your applications now and take DAT in August the latest.

dentisttobedmd, DAT scores are easily accessible to dental schools, thus even after sending an unofficial score via fax, they will obtain the official score relatively fast. If i recall correctly, schools received my official DAT scores in less than a week.

I talked to a few of the dental schools about my options for the DAT. They almost all said August would be fine to take them and it would not be worth the risk to try to push them forward into June or July. I think Aug 10 would be just fine. The important part is getting the score you want.
