since i only really shadowed with one dentist who seems to pride the office with advanced technology, I want to know is this piece of equipment common in GP's or no

CAD-CAM is still a developing technology, which means it's expensive and not perfected yet. It's not super common in practice yet, but it will probably get there. We got to make CERAC inlays in a preclinical course and everything has to be super-precise with the prep and the use of the machine. I think once the tech is ironed out (and make it a lot easier to use), it will be a great advance.

CAD-CAM stuff has been around for at least 20 years man.

If you dont mind, I'm curious why you care if it is common though?

The dentist I'm shadowing uses the latest technologies including lasers and digital x-rays. He doesn't use CAD-CAM because it's incredibly expensive (hasn't priced the cost of skilled laboratory labor out of the market) and only uses pure ceramic (I could be wrong about the exact material) which is not as hard as what a lab can produce. Therefore CAD-CAM crowns are only really useful on anterior teeth or on posterior teeth in patients that don't grind or clench, which is pretty much everybody (isn't that what teeth are supposed to do anyway?).

That is why throughout evolution we developed molars- to grind 🙂
