Well I have just recieved my first ever C-. I never thought how much a C- could bring you down until now..

I had just finished freshmen year and unforunately all my science and math classes have been atrocious. I had little to no motivation in these classes and usually slack off until an exam; so I'm not surprised at getting the grades I got.

First semester

Calculus I: B-
Comparative Psysiology: B+
Chemistry I (and lab): B+
English: A
Botany: A-

GPA: 3.43

Second semester

Chemistry II (and lab): C-
Molecular Biology: B-
Psychology: A+
Sociology: A
English: A+

GPA: 3.2?

At this point it seems like I should do something else. I understand I screwed up real bad and I'm hoping to learn from this.

How deep did I dig the hole? Do I retake the chemistry course?

Do a search through the forums, there are a lot of similar threads.

The gist of their content is this: take some time off from premed courses and figure things out. If you continue this trend, you will dig yourself too deep a hole. You won't have much hope of getting into an allopathic medical school if things don't change.

There's nothing wrong with taking time off. Take a semester, a year, even five years off. Sometime down the line, when you're more focused and disciplined (and therefore more apt to get good grades in rigorous science courses), you can keep taking courses. This won't hurt your application -- in fact it may greatly strengthen it. From what I understand, medical schools really appreciate their applicants being able to demonstrate how much thought they've put into medical school. You can use this time off to think about why you want to go into medicine, and why it's worthwhile for you.

Am I missing something? 'cuz I'm not calculating a 2.64... If Chem II (+lab) is 5 credits then you have a 3.09 semester GPA.

1st yr science can be difficult for many reasons (WEEDING OUT STUDENTS, 1st time grasping concepts, not knowing how to study in general). Once you get the hang of college in general, then everything becomes clearer, like in your sophomore yr and junior yr. While classes get harder, they become more specialized and may become more interesting, thus you'll be more interested in studying and do better.
Like at the end of The Matrix, when Neo figures out the system, I hope you do too. I was off to a slow start as a CC transfer, but I got used to things in my 3rd yr. Just don't get lazy!
Good luck!!

Yeah, I'm not getting how you calculate that 2.64 either...

This is great advice. Volunteer or shadow physicians too in your time off to increase your passion or scare you away.

How do you shawdow a Physician? Do you have to go through an orginization/ hospital or call them directly at their private practice.

My apologizes! I was typing on my phone, and accidentally wrote 2.64.. I actually have a 3.24 or 3.12 (i'm not sure) GPA this semester.

As for the C- and B-, these are all in my science/math classes.. and I'm not even sure what the GPA for that alone is.. probably terrible.

I'm thinking of re-taking the chemistry II, but if I could definitely work hard to pull an A off in Orgo, and perhaps take Calculus II and ace that.. would really show that I am able to change and produce in a harder course level.

I'm registered to take orgo in the fall, perhaps put it off? any honest suggestions?

If it's at a local medical office, you could just simply talk to the physician and ask. If it's through a hospital or a more renown center, you would most likely have to go through some type of volunteer services. You could also contact the physician's office (at a hospital, if he has one), and talk to the assistant.

retake chem and then next summer prestudy the organic chem class or during winter break- organic is usually way harder than inorganic- may study ahead on your next bio class too

how that happen?!

its not the end,
upper div sciences will amend,
tell a friend.

looking just at your grades, it's not the end of the world. at the same time however, your first post indicated that you had no motivation to study for these science classes... did you not like them? if that's true, think hard about whether you really want to keep at this grueling schedule for the next 3+ years as an undergrad, and then all over again in medical school. it's not worth doing something you hate!

point well made- sometimes your "passion" is not discovered for a while
