I am trying to use the line counting method to narrow down choices to 2 to 3 and then try to visualize it (I got 13 out of 15 for the Barron's practice test for the 1st time! Well this is a big deal for me since I skipped the TFE section before I knew the line counting method).

But I heard someone is talking about the line counting method won't even narrow down to 3 choices (out of 4), which is the case I shouldn't even bother at first because it takes some time to count lines.

Any thoughts?

I used the Line counting method for TFE and I thought it helped. Most times it did only narrow down 1 or 2 but I thought it was beneficial. Just get good at doing it quickly. I got a 22 on the PAT.

Wow! Congrats.
I guess I will keep practing the line counting method and narrow down choices and find out the answer using my perceptual ability.
Thanks!

I used the line method as well and got a 25 on the PAT. Just do it quickly and go with you gut. Timing is so important!

(I highly recommend you take a gander at the DAT forum, much more information there on this topic)

Personally I never focused on line-counting. I just practiced the TFE problems until they began to feel familiar. On the actual DAT I used the line-counting on perhaps two problems (it was only necessary those few times), this was when there were just too many steps/holes on the shape and when you narrowed it down to two choices, it was too hard to tell just by looking. So I wouldn't say it's crucial, but I do suggest knowing how to do it and quickly when absolutely necessary. (27 PAT if it matters)

Edit: If you want PAT practice that will most faithfully portray the real DAT, get the paid ADA practice test, it is incomparable.
