There have been cases of people getting in with 21s as you might find on this board...it does happen. However, in reality, its not very likely, even with a 3.9 and a great application. If you really want to get in this cycle, you may have a slightly better chance at some DO schools. Realsitically though, I would say wait till next april and retake the MCATs. I suppose you could still retake this august (not sure if registration has passes) but only if you know you could study hardcore and improve that score.

Good news and bad news, none of us actually sit on a committee. We're just repeating what we've been told.

I've heard of people getting in with a 21, but it was at mostly Osteopathic places and I knew of gal that had a 19 and got into Temple. She came from a tough past and was a URM. She has a great and compelling story.

Do you think it is possible for you to do better if you retook it in August? If not, have you considered DO school? Is you mother an Inuit? Is your father a Sioux? Do I want to make this into an AA hijacking thread? Have you ever had a sex on the beach? Have you ever had sex on the beach? What is your major? What is your minor? How many letters of recommendation do you have? Do you know for sure that they are excellent? What type of research did you do? What type of volunteering did you do? Are you a lucky guy or girl? Would you win or lose money if you went to Vegas? Are you passionate about being a physician? Do you think you could beat Ken Jennings in Jeopardy? If so, could you beat his streak? Have you searched on SDN for the millions of "What are my chances?" threads? Have you considered making a database for the sake of your colleagues who will ask the same questions? Do I wish you the best of luck either way? Absolutely!

I think that I would take the August MCAT if I were you. Still submit the AMCAS though.

Your probably not going to get a YES or NO here but here is as close as I can get. There have been instances of people getting in MD as well as DO schools with this combination but the chance is so slim that it is a statistical anomaly. People are rejected every day (pre-secondary) with 29 MCAT and 3.7 GPA.

Most schools do have a minimum cutoff for even looking at an app and that is generally (from what I?ve read) no lower than a 7 in any MCAT section so as long as you got an even 7 7 7?..but I?d take the April MCAT and then apply next cycle?it would be a waste of money this round?.sorry.

Somebody has to be the exception to the rule. I say "go for it" if you don't mind spending the cash. If you don't get in this time, it'll be that much easier for you next time. If you do get in, yea for you and how much fun would that be to prove everyone wrong?

The MSAR shows 150 acceptances and 850 rejections for students applying with a 21 MCAT. Given that your gpa is around average for matriculants and you are not a URM, I would say your chances of admission to a US MD school are remote.

Spending a year applying does involve a lot of stress and potential frustration at getting a lot of rejections. At the current time, you should be putting all your effort and thought into doing well on the MCAT. If you can get that up to the mid to high 20s, you will be much more likely to get in. Only after you have passed the MCAT hurdle would I actually apply.

In short, although it can't be said that you have no chance, it can be said that your chances are quite poor and that you would likely save a lot of frustration and heartache by waiting until you have a solid MCAT in your cap.

Alternately, consider Carribean or osteopathic schools, where you would get more love with those stats.

It's no big deal. Just retake the MCAT and shoot for that 28+ and you're money for DO schools.

To the OP: Don't listen to him. If you retake and get a 28+, with your GPA, assuming your BCPM is good, and everything else taken into account, you have a chance to get into some MD school. Good luck.

You have no chance of getting into a MD school in the US. You have a slim chance of getting into a DO school. The average accepted MCAT for DO students is around a 26.

You have a good chance of getting into a caribbean school. Many caribbean schools have averages around 20 and some even don't require the MCAT. Good luck.

Sorry to say, but Luck is right. Better to be realistic, save the money, retake the MCAT, and apply next year.

Retake the MCAT!!!!!!!!!

Study really hard and do well on it.


You should be ok if you can pull it to a 28 or above. At the least a 27 will get you in some places.

If you are a minority, that score should get you into postbac programs, that will help gain admissions into the MD after you get through the postbac program in a year.

Just wanted to join the chorus. I'll go out on a limb and say that unless you are URM, your chances are actually 0%. Places like Howard and Meharry have very low MCAT avgs, but space in those classes is primarily reserved for URM's. If you had a great GPA and were ill on test day, you might have had a shot on some waitlists, but your GPA is not above average for matriculants. Take it again and aim for 30+, that way you'll hopefully land in the 27+ range at least.

i say give it a shot if you have the extra cash....apply thinking your not gonna get accepted but at the same time, give it your best shot when you apply this time.if u do get accepted, great, if you don't, next year you'll know exactly what your doing and hopefully it'll go smooth....your mcat is pretty low, but your GPA is good though...so personally speaking, I would think of myself as stupid if I didn't apply this cycle, who knows, you just might get accepted...
