I am trying to fill out Pikeville and I hear they are mission oriented. Im kind of focusing on my experience at a large-under served city - primarily below the poverty line, complications with drugs, violence, and obesity.
I volunteered there for about 5 days, worked nearly 24 hour shifts for those 5 days, survived on about 4 hours of sleep a night sometimes more sometimes less. The whole program had multiple aspects, dealing with the several associations of poverty.
Mine was a little more interesting, dealing with obesity (counter-intuitive I know), in impoverished areas, since they are financially limited, and work -related limited, due to their long hours, they cant cook for their families all the time and resort to fast foods, or microwavable meals. I took a nutrition course this past winter and surprisingly these two chapters coincided as I spent a lot of time learning nutritive alternatives for people on tight budgets with limited time to shop and do groceries.
Overall I wrote two papers for the classes -unpublished, but it really did make me interested in public health focus-diabetes/ and obesity and medical care in underserved areas.
I also did have some experience almost 500 hours in rural-almost amish'ish Pennsylvania, in an under served hospital which catered primarily to blue-colar workers who weren't always able to afford healthcare.
And finally Im all about that country life, no I havent been to KY, but I would love to participate in a program. do you think this is something they are looking for, or are they more interested in someone LIVING in their state?
