Not me, but my friend asks me what his chances are to get into pharmacy school as an international student.
If there is anyone who got in as an international student, can you post your stats please?

I'm not sure about all schools (obviously) but some don't take international students. He will need to look at each school's policy on international students to see where he can get in, if he can. Would take awhile but would be worth doing. Sorry can't help much beyond that!
 
I know some international students who went to Creighton... I know they take a few every year. And I know another gal who graduated from USP. Some schools definitely do not take international students. I think a private school would be a safer bet than state school, because state schools have quotas for in-state students. My alma mater took 90% of instate, and the other 10% had to be from the states immediately adjacent to ours.

I am an international student doing my pharmd at Nova southeastern University. We have a program at Nova which is only for the international students who are pharmacists in their respective countries.The other school which have a similar program to us is Western University.Also USN accepts international students.My Undergrad GPA back in India was of 3.97 and a CBT Toefl of 280/300.

I am an international student from Vietnam. I just recently got accepted to Ohio State 3 days after my interview...I'm so happy cuz Ohio State PHarm is one of the famous one in the US.

My stats: BS Biochemistry & BA Chemistry
GPA: 3.67
Toefl: 98/120
PCAT: 72 percentile
1 year of research + 1 year of volunteering in Pharm store
 
hi, i read one of your posts that you're an international student from vietnam. Did you do your bachelors in vietnam or in the united states?
I'm also an international student from malaysia. I'm currently completing my BA in chemistry in california. I just wanted to get some advice from someone who is in the same boat as I am. Any information/advice/tips would be great. Thanks

I finished my BS in Biochem at CSULB, cali.

my advise is that:

if you an int'l student adn have an average gpa, not have something special, should apply to private schools....

If you think you're special, apply big, public school.

I never think that Ohio state will accept me 😀

What are the private schools that offer programs for International students?

I have two questions:

What does USN stand for?

I currently go to a pharmacy school in Australia and since I am in such a unique situation(quite complicated), I am not even sure if I will be eligible for the FPGEE after I obtain my Aussie pharmacist license. The grading system in Australia is completely different from the US system. Will the international pharmacy programs take this difference into account?
 
You'd have to submit your transcripts/degrees to WEP for evaluation and conversion into US equivalents.
 
usually, most of private schools take in int'l students...such as USC, USN, Western, Nova, ...

But they require your bank or financial statement to prove that you can afford the cost of one year or even the whole 4 years...(depends on school and year)

my wife wants to apply to pharm schools here in the USA. she graduated from Banglore, India in 2006. We are wondering which schools accept applications in such situations and what is needed and most importantly what are the chances? will chances increase if she was a permanent resident? ( just a thought). financing her education is not an issue... Please help

Ans: Although she might receive some transferred credits for some general non-science courses, most schools require that most or all prerequisites be completed in an accredited school in US or Canada. A least, one school I know that accept all foreign credits is University of Southern Nevada (www.usn.edu). However, her transcript must be evaluated by a credential evaluation service such as WES. Moreover, the average GPA for acceptance for that school is high, so she need to have very good GPA from India. To increase her chances of being accepted, she might need to go back to college and repeat some science classes or take some additional classes Check directly with schools for specific requirement or on website at http://www.pharmcas.org/collegesschools/directoryalphastate.htm

However, it's definitely possible to get in. There are many private/public schools that accept international students (eg. Temple. USN, U of Iowa etc & etc). And, you can noticed that some international students here on this board got accepted.

thanks for the info for future reference but if i am not mistaken, you are this information relates to students who have not attended graduate school. My wife has a BS in pharmacy from India. But if this is still tie let me know and thanks for the input.

She already had BS in pharmacy....humm then it's a totally different story.

I used to know a pharmacist who graduated from my home country and took the The Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination® (FPGE&#174😉 and obtained her license to work here. Some schools accept international applicant with foreign pharmacy degree...I just google and found this http://www2.pharmacy.umaryland.edu/admissions/pharmd/intlpharmacists.html

To all int'l students
One more thing I should remind you that:

CA public schools nicely deny to int's students ( they don't say on the application, but they do send you the rejection letters, after requiring a lots of things.)

USC requires bank statement of 70000 before they look at your file.
UOP, Western require my transcript from university in VN ( which is ridiculous, and cost me a lot of money).
Loma Linda just sent me a rejection letter on Feb 20

CA private schools do take us in..but they are double expensive than other state schools. The average tuition of USC, UOP, Western, Loma Linda is 45000/year + 17000 room & board = 65000/ year...

Compare to other state: tuition is about 25000- 30000 + 12000 room board = 45000/ year...

Also, you can have more chance to get a H1B working as a pharmacist in other states...

My plan is going to Ohio State, and get a H1B from there....Eventhough I am accepted to Temple U and USN in nevada, 2 interviews from florida schools, 1 from Wingate U....

3 years ago, before applying to Pharmschools, I applied to nursing school in CA ( private + public). When I called and asked why I was rejected, they replied " We put you on the waitlist, because we have to favor permanent residents eventhough they 're not as good as you. But we can't do something else, limited budget..."

I know that's suck 'cuz at that time, my GPA is 3.89, A's in reprequisite course, a few B's in ESL, toefl is 247, 1 year of volunteering in Oncology at CHOC, and 3 very good recommendation...

I know I made a very big mistake 'cuz I did want to try other states....
3 years later, I apply to 20+ pharmacy schools...flew around 7 times for interviews, and I'll believe I get in at least 3 schools....( Cost me >5000$)

Rejection from nursing school is a big motivation for my revenge, 'cuz it is a big shame to me, while my dad is a GI surgeon and mom is DDS, and I couldn't get into a nursing schools....:laugh::meanie:

My advise is " put yourself in correct places, proudly, capably and financially"👍

Hey.. QHL.. Just curious questions. How many years do you have to be in H1B status before you can apply for GC? Can you bypass H1B and go straight to GC? Is a pharmacist categorized in EB1, EB2 or EB3 for GC process as a pharmacist. A doctorate level may give pharmacist some advantages. EB3 is now in backlog. Do they require labor of certifications? Some foreign pharmacists asked me about the process.

Sorry for your experience applying to nursing schools. I was an international students in a public nursing school. I didn't have that problem. I guess nursing schools in CA is more competitive.
 
Iam an International Student Pharmacist at the University of Tennessee. I think iam the only International Student (F1 visa) in my Class. I did my Undergrad in the US though, but still that does not mean anything. As long as you have full-filled their requirements you can get in,, at least at UT. Just remember you either have to pay from your own pocket or get a private loan, for which you need an american Cosigner.

i can understand how difficult is it for an international student to get into pharmacy coll as i am going through this process...
i have also applied unis like usn , nova and western ...went to interview but havent heard anything yet....
 
Amazing dude....QHL....You are really dedicated and determinant....I am an int'l from vietnam too, and I will got interview from UF in FL this April. I knew several int'l students got in before me so I think that my stat will help me well. Cheer VN students....
 
I'm from the UK and completed my studies at Edinburgh University.

BSc in Biochemistry - WES converted GPA is 3.87

Doesn't include Psychology that I took in the US and got a 4.0

PhD in Molecular Endocrinology

8 years experience after PhD doing research (14 published papers, 2 pending)

Native English speaker so no TOEFL!

I also don't need PCAT for the schools I'm applying to.

Not sure if I count as an International student though since I'm a permanent resident (wife is American). Seems like that was a smart move...j/k 😀

I'm only applying to local schools since my wife has a great job and we don't want to move my mother-in-law who lives with us. I've been told by several Pharmacists that the school you go to doesn't make that big a difference really, other than for prestige.

I have 4.0 gpa 94% PCAT, and since I can't work illegally i volunteered at an ind pharmacy for 3 months last summer...but didn't get in to UH and UT. I got interviews from all schools I applied to (A&M, UT, UH) but getting that acceptance letter seems quite hard 🙁 i still have A&M left, but I'm really discouraged right now...don't know if i did bad in my interviews or my international status just dragged me down.

QHL, how did you do in interviews? any extraordinary speech skills or anything you recommend? I'm probably gonna apply to incarnate word since i don't want to go out of state...

You have a really good GPA and PCAT scores, why don't you apply to other pharmacy school out of states. I am an international student too. I got 2 interviews for pharmacy schools this year and they all denied. I am so sad now and I don't know what to do. I think our status drag us down. 🙁 But you have a better chance bc of ur GPA and PCAT. Try next year!

I don't understand the obsession with staying in state. I guess it would make sense for Americans, but come on, you left your country to study in another one! If you are willing to study in an entirely different country, why are you afraid to study in a different state within that same country?

hey you have real good numbers... but dont worry u r not the only one... i hv some good numbers too but no luck any whr...i applied to arnd 4 universities this yr but not even 1 took me.. i hv 4.0 gpa too but i guess doesnt matter... luck is more imp i guess

why not apply to TSU as you don't want schools outside of Texas.

hey guys. im not sure what exactly u mean by an international student. im from canada and i did my first year Bsc biochemisty. ive decided to go to india to do pharmacy. and i have a green card in the states and im a canadian citizen. and im comming back to the states after 4 years of pharmacy and want to do my masters there. will i be considered an international student?

hey just curious. Legally, do they allow you to keep your greencard after 4 year in india even for educational purpose? Do they allow you to be out of the US that long?
I thought the maximum is one year.
 
you know...thats a very good question. i'll have to look that up. lol. well my first option would be canada, so im not that worried. but incase i dont get into canadian program then im hoping i still have my green card for the states.
 
Good luck to you all, I got accepted to UF this year, so I will start my 4 years and then rock and rolll....Nothing is imposible....My GPA is 3.9 and PCAT 91%, TOEFL 88 iBT....For international students, I think we need to put extra effort to our GPA and PCAT because we are always in disadvantage position comparing to resident students....

hi I have done my pharmacy back from india. can anyone help me? I did apply for nova and western but i got rejection so i need to start the pre-pharmacy courses , so where should i start the courses is it in pharmacy college or from a comunity college..... I wanna know is it worth to do pre-pharmacy courses or not..... and after doing pre-pharmacy is there any chance to get admission in pharmacy college or not.....plz tell me which pre-pharmacy courses to do

2) How did you volunteer in Pharm store with F1 Visa?
3) Did you do research after you get your BS?

I am an int's Student too. I got in 3 private schools. I hope you do not give up your determination, and motivation. Apply to more private schools, and write a excellent personal essay will give you a lot more chance to get it.

hi QHL, I am an international student from vietnam too. I just got accept to Temple Pharmacy school but I really worry about the tuition. Could you tell me something how you could survive in the Pharm school for 4 years?! I know there is very limited help for international student and there is no TA, fellowships or scholarships for international student at Temple Pharmacy. So, could international student studying pharmacy can work outside of campus. I read your post that you said about H1B or something. Could you tell me more about that!? is there any opportunity for international student to do paid research or do co-op during summer? thank you so much in advance!!!

I got it as Canadian (got accepted 2 days ago) into the University of Southern Nevada. I was on the wait list for a while as top 30 but got in finally.

My stats 3.8 gpa with all the prereq's for the school itself. I had no PCAT, no bachelor's degree. But, I killed the interview 🙂.

Does anyone know anything about international loans ?
 
I was just at Temple university today, and they said that ,they are accepting students from all over the world.

I am also an international student and tried to get a loan from the privit bank.
Wells fargo requires a US citizen as a co-signer and Citi Bank requirs a US citizen or permernent resident as a co-signer...The interest rate depens on your credit and co-siner's credit....I failed to get a loan from these banks because my ant (she is a us citizen) denied co-sign....

CA public schools nicely deny to int's students ( they don't say on the application, but they do send you the rejection letters, after requiring a lots of things.)

USC requires bank statement of 70000 before they look at your file.
UOP, Western require my transcript from university in VN ( which is ridiculous, and cost me a lot of money).
Loma Linda just sent me a rejection letter on Feb 20

CA private schools do take us in..but they are double expensive than other state schools. The average tuition of USC, UOP, Western, Loma Linda is 45000/year + 17000 room & board = 65000/ year...

Compare to other state: tuition is about 25000- 30000 + 12000 room board = 45000/ year...

Also, you can have more chance to get a H1B working as a pharmacist in other states...

My plan is going to Ohio State, and get a H1B from there....Eventhough I am accepted to Temple U and USN in nevada, 2 interviews from florida schools, 1 from Wingate U....

3 years ago, before applying to Pharmschools, I applied to nursing school in CA ( private + public). When I called and asked why I was rejected, they replied " We put you on the waitlist, because we have to favor permanent residents eventhough they 're not as good as you. But we can't do something else, limited budget..."

I know that's suck 'cuz at that time, my GPA is 3.89, A's in reprequisite course, a few B's in ESL, toefl is 247, 1 year of volunteering in Oncology at CHOC, and 3 very good recommendation...

I know I made a very big mistake 'cuz I did want to try other states....
3 years later, I apply to 20+ pharmacy schools...flew around 7 times for interviews, and I'll believe I get in at least 3 schools....( Cost me >5000$)

Rejection from nursing school is a big motivation for my revenge, 'cuz it is a big shame to me, while my dad is a GI surgeon and mom is DDS, and I couldn't get into a nursing schools....:laugh::meanie:

My advise is " put yourself in correct places, proudly, capably and financially"👍

I am also an international student, currently pursuing a pharmD at Saint Louis College of Pharmacy. There are not a lot of international students here, but they do accept F-1 students. Usually students get in fresh from high school, but you could also transfer in. (in that case, you would become a 3rd year-it's a 6 year program) I believe we accept more transfers these days compared to a couple years ago.
 
Hi there. I have had the experience of working with many wonderful International students who come into my pharmacy for rotations. From what I understand there are only 3 pharmacy schools in the US that have international programs. I am in FL, so I see the Nova students. I was talking to the one who was there with us this month and he said the chances of getting into the international were like .001. My friend said he got a Masters degree in India, so that gave him a bit of an advantage. I can honestly say most of these students are the most respectful and hardest students we have ever gotten. That's my experience with the international students. I wish your friend the best of luck!
 
Hi! I'm an international student from Malaysia. I've been accepted to University of Tennessee for Fall 2010, but I've completed my bachelor's in the US. My GPA is not fantastic but it's okay, 3.50 and my PCAT composite score is 93. I think the interviews matter much more than your background. The several schools that I went for interviews have been very welcoming to internationals, so it's up to the students themselves to demonstrate their passion for pharmacy and their interest in the school.

However, keep in mind the school's mission goals. I've been to an interview and kept talking about how I would like to get a PharmD/MPH at that school and eventually settle elsewhere/internationally. Eventually my interviewer "kindly" informed/hinted me that their school is a public institution and they are committed to serve their community --> they want their graduates to STAY in their state and work! Well, naturally I didn't get the acceptance since I won't be a good fit there. Hope this helps in some way 🙂
 
First of all in my opinion all international students can get into pharmacy schools.
I got acceptance letters from Texas tech, mercer university, UH and possibly UT Austin (withdrew interview).
Got interviews at incarnate word and OU.

My pcat was 84% gpa 3.81(cummulative BS in CS).
Did volunteer work for the sake of it. Shadowed a pharmacist for 30 approximately hrs(exaggerated).

The point is guys, it is harder for international students but if you are determined, if you prepare well for the interview, send thank you notes, you will get in. So please lets stop this B.S. which totally drove me into depression when I applied to pharmacy schools and be optimistic and hard working.👍
