Is there any way to get a residency through the military?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No, at this point, there really isn't a way for you to jump right into military GME. The military has their own residency programs, for now (I'm still a cynic), but to access them, one has to enter via a pathway that already incurs a training obligation such as ROTC/Academy, USUHS, or HPSP. You could MAYBE join after med school, MAYBE get an internship, then be sent to a several year GMO tour before being allowed to apply for residency, but I do not know a mechanism for that.

Check the stickies for more, and try the search function. This topic comes up pretty much this time every year.

The .mil isn’t some second rate program for people who can’t match in the civilian world.
These threads always piss me off. They may not be MGH and Stanford, but they’re fine. Or at least they used to be. Though if you want to “Be all you can be” and you’re the man, you’re better off up in the stratosphere of the ivied walls.

Every year around match time.

Every year.

Speaking of stickies. A thread to address this would be good for people to reference.

TITLE: "Did you fail to match in the civilian match? You also wouldn't have matched in the Military"

Trouble is...many think it is easier in the military because it is for internship since at the very least they need GMO's and you have to pay back your time, but continuing on to PGY-2 would be the roadblock. The ones with the really poor performance never match to PGY-2 and beyond. You'll be stuck in GMO land or doing a residency with lower requirements than the one you originally applied for. Maybe it could say "You also wouldn't have matched after PGY-1 in the Military"

It’s not technically true that they can’t apply but selection is exceedingly unlikely.

That said, we should have some empathy for these folks. They are in a really difficult situation. Go read the SOAP thread.

OP, this year’s match is over. The process for applying next year will be published by each service in June. I’m aware of a single person who applied via this route and was accepted. He had no red flags and was joining to be with his spouse.

I'm sorry for offending anyone with this thread. It was not my intention. That's not how I view the military at all. Just inquiring about job opportunities or ways the military could possibly make use of me.

Sorry to bother you all

Imagine how much worse it'll be if the military gets out of the GME business.

Those who advocate an end to all military GME should be careful what they wish for.

We get it. You’re desperate. Doesn’t hurt to ask. Sorry the military doesn’t have an avenue for you.

This is not solely a "you" issue. As mentioned above, this question comes up every year, and so you're just a straw on the camel's back. But do keep in mind that you're coming into a forum filled with military physicians, most of which did military residencies, and implying (whether intentionally or not) that the training they got is some kind of consolation prize if you don't match. I imagine that you're simply in a tough position and looking for a pathway out. But sometimes this question comes off a little demeaning. Again, not necessarily in your case. It gets asked every year.

Your best bet is to put in a research year and try again. Good luck.

I realized I worded the question poorly and had meant if the military had any use for me, not necessarily as a resident.

On top of being rushed/anxious during the SOAP I didn't take into account the gravity of what I was asking. Thank you for your time.
