Is there?

I've been accepted to the program.
For students that go there, are going to go there, or that have graduated, what are the negative aspects of this school? I can't think of any. Am I looking to superficial? What negative things about the school should I think about when I try to decide which DO school to attend.

By the way, the snow and the heat where I live are the same as KC since I live in the midwest.

Thanks

Patel,

When I interviewed at KCUMB, I asked everyone I met what they most disliked about the school because I too thought that KCUMB couldn't be THAT perfect! I'm a student here now, and guess what? It's NOT perfect, but I like the school a lot, I like my classmates, and I don't regret coming here one bit.

So, for my negative ... The class sizes are too big, IMHO. However, all of the labs are done in smaller groups, so it really isn't a big deal. How's that for a negative? 😉

I'm a 2nd yr at KCUMB and have really enjoyed my time here thus far. This school is not perfect, but I don't think any medical school is. I really like how the curriculum is set up for the most part. It is an organ-based curriculum that integrates the basic sciences w/ the clinical aspects and pathology of disease. Biochemistry is probably one of the subjects neglected in the organ-based curriculum, b/c you get lectures here and there (of course, I haven't had endocrine yet and I know there's a ton of biochem in that section) and have trouble seeing the big picture. This isn't too big of a concern for me.....it's important for the boards but not as yield as most of the other subjects (path, phys, pharm, micro). Depending on where you want to rotate, that could be a disadvantage. KCUMB has clinical rotations spread around different states for 3rd yr, but some people from the coasts who want to go home don't have that option (no core rotations in CA, WA, OR, & most states on the W coast w/ the exception of FL, NY, NJ). You can set up your own rotations 4th yr and get them approved by the school (w/ the exception of cardio, ER, & rural which must be done @ a KCUMB core site).

How does crime affect students around kcumb?

Overall, not much.

There's a 711 across the street which is open 24 hours/day and you have shady people hanging around it when it gets dark.

Also, you can have random stragglers that walk across campus through the night and that can be a little unnerving if you're by yourself. Like any city, you need to be street smart. People have had their cars broken into (easy way to avoid this... if you drive your car to campus, don't leave anything sitting out in the open on your seats... especially any custom stereo headunits and whatnot). If you're a girl, at night do NOT walk home by yourself. Thats just stupid.

Study groups are a wonderful thing, and there's no reason to be hitting the anatomy lab by yourself. The computer lab/libraries all close by midnight, so you really shouldn't be on campus that late. If you live in CT, 5th floor study lounge is open 24/7.

Overall, I think the instruction is fine and I do like most of the faculty. I suggest PM-ing current students directly for specifics. Good luck.
