Is there no demand for podiatrists? why is it so easy to get in to pod school?

In the end its the choice of the students in what he/she wants to go into. And if the student has a strong background in science and excellent scores, he/she will have no problem in medical school in the Carib, so long as proper studying/review is manifested.

In the end, an MD is an MD.

This is the confusing part. If that were the case, why is the student matriculating at a Caribbean school?

exactly! and furthermore, what is a carib MD with 0 american PG worth? i love the bahamas, but to be stuck there as a gp would really suck.

This post is just courting the FMG posse to come along and get mad. It'll be a battle royal between the podiatry posse and the FMG possee..

Anyway, before anyone goes and knocks anyone elses training, just remember that a good portion of our referrals come from PCPs and some may have gone to the Caribbean!

And finally for the poster subtly named Doctor (who I suspect is just a self-promoted premed) don't get your hopes up, caribbean medical graduates do get some pretty competitive residencies and are practicing in all areas of medicine. They are well embraced in the medical community, it is just that many premeds like to compare medical schools and such without any real information or exposure to the medical community as a whole.

Here's a valuable lesson for all you pre pods... How it works in the real world...

"Alleghenypod, will you send all your foot and ankle complaints my way? Since all the other pods around this one horse town are already making $300k+ from the referrals they get from all their 4.0 IVY LEAGUE Medical doctor PhD, brain surgeon, best friends and who are too good to talk to a Caribbean med grad, I seem like your best and only candidate. Plus tell all of your FMG friends that I will do their F/A work as well if they would be so kind to send them my way!!! I highly value your medical expertise and know that you will be a very good physician because you have a passion for helping people in need and you have already SACRIFICED so many comforts and things in order to to make a difference in the lives of your future patients! Honestly, I kind of admire you guys and your courage to pursue your passions for treating patients and becoming an MD. I will work hard to treat your patients with the same respect, dignity and compassion that you yourself do.

In return, if I find any nonpedal findings on any of my patients, which warrant a consult etc, I will send them your way."

Because there are those who have been accepted to osteopathic schools and not into allopathic schools and want to go to respectable, highly proficient medical institutions that produce competent, hard working MDs that are recognized by the United States; offer excellent greenbook clinical sites etc. etc.

Isn't it funny how pre-meds who havent even taken their MCATs or been accepted to any medical schools are giving advices or talking down to those who have already been accepted to multiple osteopathic and allopathic schools? hilarious.

Well said, whiskers. Well said.
You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours.

Btw, decide on a school yet?OCPM summer 2007 right?

What does a surgical residency have to do with anything? Lower-tier Gen Surg residencies aren't hard to come by. I said you can't do Cardiology, Allergy, or Gastro from the Carib because they only take fellows from top IM residencies, which don't take Carib students, and sometimes not even DO students. Do you disagree? And don't think because you are a med student (in the Carib, no less) that you have more of a right to seek or find this information than I do. Simply go to the Cards, Allergy, and Gastro sections of this site as I have and learn from those who have the first-hand knowledge.

Okay, you have no idea what you're talking about, kid.
Do you know how many carib MD grads get into hundreds of residencies every year? Heres the 2007 match list of just SGU (St. George University School of Medicine). ***Note that this isn't even including schools such as St. James, St. Eustatius, Windsor, Ross, AUC, AUA, Saba, MUA etc whose graduates are landing on hundreds of residencies in the 'states every year--and increasing--as the demand for MDs/DOs increases. :meanie:

Anyways heres the SGU Match List, kid.

OK. You really need to do more research.:laugh:😍

You have to keep in mind that there are 40+ Caribbean medical schools and only 4-6 have consistently high quality residency appointments in every single specialty. Every year the better Caribbean schools match students into Ortho, Derm, Rad-Onc, General Surgery etc etc.

The attrition rates are high 3-15% but not as high as you are trying to make people believe. Just like POD school, some people are accepted that should not be accepted and they are weeded out. The same thing happened in every single university course we took in undergrad.

I think SGU is the only real selective Caribbean school.

A few people who flunked out of my program in the first or second year were accepted to Ross right after, and that kinda makes you wonder if their gpa/MCAT stats are for their incoming students or graduates? We also have a SPM program here at my school with many borderline pre-med/dent/pharm/etc students, and I've heard from more than a few people that all you really need to get into some Carib schools is a 20+ MCAT and a passing a credit check (since tuition alone there is sometimes $40k or more). I'm not saying you can't get a great education there, but keep in mind that those programs have sky high attrition rates. Many well known US student loan services have cut off loans to students of many Carib schools because too many of those students were flunking out with tons of debt they have no way to repay...

As you are at a Carib school, just remember that several of those fellowships are closed off to you. Cardiology, Allergy, Gastro, etc. only take those from top IM residencies... and top IM residencies don't take Caribbean grads.

How could you be any more wrong? At least you have a cool avatar.

And how is requiring a 2.75 GPA (those schools don't require a 3.0, sorry) with no MCAT necessary more competitive than Podiatry? If you are trying to say that Carib MD schools are more competitive than DPM schools, you are quite misinformed.

What school srae you looking at? The 4-5 decent schools require MCAT and have average GPAs above 3.1. SGU even says their average is 3.4, which even I am leery of.

OK. You really need to do more research.:laugh:😍

How many of those are categorical spots? If the "impressive" ones are prelim, that's not really impressive.

How many students from the graduating class didn't match at all? How many scrambled?

It makes sense that caribbean schools produce 100's of students who get U.S. residencies every year - SGU's medical school alone has a total enrollment of over 3,000 (divided by 4 years means ~800 students per year), 2,500 of which are U.S. citizens no doubt with the intention of returning to practice in the U.S.

Even if they all matched their first choice categorical (which again - I'm skeptical of), the match list doesn't strike me as that impressive, no offense, it's okay....decent (of course as subjective as all match list appraisals are, but there aren't really any matches in there I'm blown away by).

I have nothing against caribbean medical grads, I'm just wondering where you're going with this and what you're trying to prove by posting that lengthy and uninformative match list.
