Do medschools give students a book list or is it just up to the student to fish around on there own for textbooks?

I would have assumed that, like in college, courses have specific textbooks, but the way people are talking here it sounds like you are left on your own to search.

Can someone clarify this for me?

Most medical schools have a book list. I wouldn't buy everything on the list, however. Talk to current MS Is and MS IIs. They will be able to provide more guidance in terms of which textbooks are the most useful and which ones will just gather dust. If you are going to Downstate, you should e-mail Tim. During orientation week, your school should provide you with the book list.
