Is there time to do research during the 3rd or 4th year AND be able to put it on applications for residency? I have heard that certain rotations from 3rd year can be moved to fourth to free up time?

Don't move core clerkships to fourth year unless you are ill or have some extenuating circumstances. Most schools have one or two required rotations fourth year and then you may want to do some away AIs. If you are still doing required clerkships, you won't have much time before interviews.

My residency interviews started in October and went through December. It wasn't much of a deal to leave during an elective to interview but attendance is generally required for a core clerkship. Research is not absolutely necessary for residency and most folks match just fine without it. Your time is going to be pretty crunched once third year starts. It is highly unlikely that you are going to get any kind of meaningful research project done in the little free time (weekend here and there) during your core clerkships.

You would be better served to do an AI at your program of interest and do well rather than delay core clerkships.

Would you be doing it cos you love the research or to boost your residency application. I would think research that late wouldnt help that much

Yes.

Sure, a lot of schools allow this. But do you want to be interviewing without having done your FP rotation?

Well, like many things it depends. During your big rotations there isn't a lot of extra time to spend on research except perhaps a bit of writing here and there. However we had 8 weeks of elective 3rd year, that time could be used for research. As far as putting off core rotations, some schools will let you do this... but be careful. Don't put off medicine or surgery, but 4 weeks of neurology etc (we have a required 3rd year rotation) would be ok to delay if you felt like you really wanted the research time.

I was thinking of moving ambulatory care or something minor like that that I am sure I do not want to do, obviously not any of the big ones. Also the reason for this is that I would like to do my residency at an academic institution and I have heard that it is preferable to have some exposure to research and 3rd and beginning of 4th year will probably be my only time to get it in.
