We keep old scripts boxed up and stored in the storage room outside of the pharmacy. the boxes are torn up and scripts with patient info are all exposed. any front store employees going to the storage area to throw away empty boxes into the compactor can easily see it. is this hipaa violation? if so, will they fire the f/s manager, pharmacy manager, staff pharmacists? or what do cvs usually do in hipaa violations?

This just sounds like a bad idea...if store employees are throwing away boxes into the compactor back there, does that mean the garbage and recycling services go through there too?

If so, doesn't sound like a "room" more like a loading/unloading dock. In that case, I'd be more worried about it being open-ish to the public (like someone can just wander back there if a grate is open).

they're not going to do anything. just correct the issue. rebox them and tape them up securely with "HPI" written on them.
