the summers during my undergrad, i taught art to kids through an informal manner. i did not join an official company or start my own tutoring business. but it was a solid teaching experience and i was paid $$ for it. most of my students are sons and daughters of family friends back home, and i am well known in the "family friend" circle for my artistic abilities.

i would think work experience/paid is the best description, but can this also count as leadership? i already have substantial tutoring experiences (years), but no formal leadership activity.

thanks!

Do you feel comfortable leaving one of the parents as a contact? I know plenty of kids who tutor kids outside of official company/school channels for money. I don't see why it isn't legitimate as long as some of the parents can vouch for you as a tutor.

No. I would not dilute your 15 EC slots with something like this. Unless you have nothing else and even so, I would not put something like this down. It will not look good on your apps. Maybe you can talk about it during interviews. You could start by telling them that you didnt put it in your apps because you didnt know if it was appropriate there. See how your interviewer responds. Proceed accordingly and make it sound like you found that you like teaching and how this experience has developed your character. Hope this helps.

I would definitely put that as paid work on your app. 🙂

thanks for the comment. i might lump this together with a few other activities and group it under one entry. art is a significant part of who i am, and i have a bunch of similar activities to group together in addition to my main artistic endeavor entries.

I totally disagree. If this is something you did multiple summers and you got something out of it, then include it (assuming you have space). Plus it ties in nicely with your current post grad time working on your graphic novel.

Not sure why this would look bad on an app...?

You say it like we should fill 15 EC slots.

i've heard differing opinions on this. a few adcoms really emphasize filling up all spots, while others actively discourage from doing so, as it gives off a sense of desperation

i spoke with one of my friend who got into a top tier med school (top 10). i asked her straight out how many spots she filled up, and she told me around 7-8 (she couldn't remember it exactly). she also told me that none of the people she knows filled out with than 10 spots. but then again, they are all traditional students who only had 3 years to build their application.
