My mother is going to be tested for the BRCA genes and she is going to see a medical geneticist. She invited me to come along because I am very interested in that field. Would it be too weird if I asked the doctor if I could shadow him while at my mom's appointment? Should I call him later and ask? At least if we're face to face he can't ignore me. I feel like this is a chance that I shouldn't waste if I ever want to shadow a medical geneticist.

I think it's all in how you approach it and their personality. If they hate having someone shadow in general, it might be a little awkward. If they enjoy it, I'm sure they'd be happy to let you shadow.

If I were you I would attend the appointment, then send an email after saying you thought they were great and would love to learn more about medical genetics, were wondering if you could shadow, etc.

Nah. Like the saying goes (I think) "the worst that could happen is a no."

No offense to the recent poster, but screw the email and ask him/her after the appointment. Face to face.

You're definitely better off straight up asking while you're there.
The worst they can say is no and then at least you know and you'll have your answer right away.

I personally think it's kind of weird asking while your mom is there for a procedure, and puts the physician in an uncomfortable situation. Maybe if the mood feels right or they seem inviting to the idea, go for it. Definitely not a yes or no question, I'd say feel this one out and go based on that judgement.
