Hi all,

I am preparing to apply this upcoming cycle, and I wanted to ask if my clinical experience looked good enough.

Clinical work experience

Emergency Room Research Assistant
11 months: 700 hours

I respond to trauma pages and codes to enroll patients in various studies examining tramatic injury, stroke, cardiac arrests, and various surgerical procedures. Many of the studies require working with physicians to consent patients and adminster clinical protocols. Most of these protocols last at least 3 hours, so I stay with the patient while they receive care from the nurses and doctors.

Clinical Volunteering

HIV Tester/Clinic Host
6 months: 100 hours

At this clinic, I adminster blood or oral tests to determine the preliminary result of HIV. Individuals or couples in the community who want a free test can come to the clinic where I give them the test. Regardless of the result, I sit with the person to discuss prevention plans and resources available in the clinic. Another role I have in the clinic is clinic host where I greet patients and help them complete the intake form and their health history. In general, I sit with the patients before they are seen.

Pop-Up Rural Clinic
3 years: 40 hours

Each month, doctors and med students go to rural areas to provide primary care. As a volunteer, I write down health history and vitals. I also discuss with the patients while they wait to be seen. For some patients, I get to sit with them while they are being seen.

So that is what my clinical experience outside of shadowing will look like. I will be continuing the emergency room position and volunteering with the clinic during my gap year. However, I know that gap year hours are insignificant.

I can speak at length about my experiences in these roles, but I just want to know if these hours are good enough for applying.

Uhhh, what are you talking about? Plenty of applicants have hundreds, if not thousands, of clinical hours. If you work full-time in a clinical position, it’s pretty easy to rack up those numbers.
He’s saying that 700 is definitely enough to not hinder him acceptance into medical school.

Dude I barely had 100 hours total clinic time (shadowing, volunteering, etc.) and have gotten into 7 schools so far. As long as you can demonstrate that you have learned valuable lessons from your time in the clinic, you are golden. Seriously, quality over quantity can work

Exactly, I didnt have ANY clinical work and got 3 acceptances hahaha

Friend of mine had shadowing and 0 clinical volunteering/experience, 2 acceptances. Had 519 and 3.9 though.

The hours are plenty, but I might suggest that you work on your descriptions before you submit the application. These sound like they are probably interesting experiences, but they could be sold waaayyy better
